Cool 10-speaker sound system

I've read in the FAQ that a 10-speaker sound system once was an option on the 944. I'm not satisfied with my current standard sound system. So I want to convert to the 10-speaker system.

Does anybody have pictures of the configuration of the speakers in the interieur, or any information to make my system as close as possible to factory spec. I want my car to be as original as possible.

Thanks

It was standard in 951S and an option, I believe, post S, in other words MY '89 and '90.
Check those.

I have it

I would highly recommend listening to one before you take that step. Besides, most if not all of the 10 speaker setups are no longer functioning properly. When I bought my car, the fronts were disconnected because the drivers were blown, and most likely the crossovers as well. Plus the location of the mids is in a horrible spot for correct sound imaging. But, in the end it is your decision. I ended up modifying my door panels to use 6 1/2 Focals. I am not satisfied with how it currently looks, but the sound is much better. At some point, I am going to redo the door panels so the install looks more factory while still keeping the 6 1/2's.

I've got the 10 speaker setup and all the speakers needs replaced. Most of the speakers are odd sizes. Plus it was a premium sound package at least 10 years ago, so there's much better setups currently on the market. If I were you I'd go with a custom setup. IMHO.

Best of luck!

I agree..
My S has the 10 speaker. It is not that good. If you want something good go completely aftermarket.

A previous owner changed over to the 10-speaker system in my car and the last owner put in all new speakers in it as he wasn't pleased with the quality of the sound. I believe it's pioneer speakers, but I've never taken any apart to see. Whatever he put in sounds good with the Alpine CD player he added to it (not a super audiophile, YMMW). However if I'm driving hard or tired of hearing tunes, I prefer the sound of the music box under the hood

Cheers!

You could probably get a $500 system from circuit city that sounds better that a premium factory system from the 80s, or even most recent premium systems.
'Premium' and 'factory' don't belong in the same sentence.

Also, if you're listening to stereo CDs, you only need two speakers. So rather than wasting money on 10 average speakers and amps, buy one great pair of components, a great sub, and one or two great amps to power them.

Well like most of the rest of you my 10 speaker system had several blown speakers, but once I replaced them, it sounds incredible! I do have a modern mp3 head unit and MB Quart speakers now. If you're going for a factory look setup you might get the door panels off of a premium car (or just cut the hole for the tweeter in yours and get the lower grille part and speaker pod off another car)

Really though you can probably get a custom job that is as good or better for maybe less money. The 10 speaker cars are a rarity. The wiring for this setup seems overly complex too.

Thanks for all the replies, based on these I decided to:

First, finding someone who actually has a 10-speaker system in good working order and listening how that sounds, and seeing how it looks inside the car. Second, go to an audio shop and talk to an expert for the best set-up for my car (and wallet)

I hope I can find a system that sounds good and looks good inside my car. I don't want to make extra holes in my car in order to fit speakers.

To bad they don't make B&O car stereo's, I like the way there sets look and sound. Allthough I probably would have to sell my car to buy one.

On the topic of B&O products... I think that something like a B&W would be nice... B&O phones are the best looking things ever. And did you know... in those B&O CD changers, the unit learns how you entered the CD in to it so that when you stop a CD it spins it to be positioned the same way that you put it in, i.e. all your CDs will face the right way when they're not playing... talk about attention to detail!

I have the 10 speaker setup! I AM an audiophile, as i am a musician and i do a lot of recording. I am quite picky on how my audio sounds. My other car even has as 11-band EQ installed cause 2 amps and the head couldnt get it right! Anyways, the 10 speaker system basically puts a 5 1/2" and a 3 1/2" speaker underneath the door handle where the pocket usually goes. There is a grill ther now. There is a tweeter next to the window controls. There is a 6 1/2" and a tweeter side by side on the wall next to each rear seat. So that all adds up to 10. The system sounds good...but it has to be turned up. It doesnt sound good soft. I never drive this car with the stereo up that loud usually (since i got that SFR...) so i dont get to enjoy the 10 speaker very much. I tried replacing the speakers but that failed. You need VERY VERY VERY shallow magnets. I bought Alpine and the magnet was HUGE. You need 2" depth overall or less. Goodluck. (if you find let me know!) Ok here is a picture of the door panel. Its the grill under the handle. The tweeter is near the top close to the inside of the door. Please let me know and i can take some heavy detailed ones. And if you like i can probably take the panel apart and get some internal shots. Just let me know. (oh, i have brand new alpine 5 1/2" components w/ tweeters and crossover. Brand new with box...magnet is too big for a 944...starting at $150...)

Tony,

Thanks for all the info, by the way your car looks the business. I wouldn't trade such a car for a new 911 if they paid me for it.

Neither would I ! The 944 has the best dash/interior layout of any Porsche made in my opinion! Until they get that right...im sticking with the 44! (even then i wouldnt sell it)

THe 944 10 speaker has such capability for doing an unbelievable system setup. The only thing that sucks is the speaker depth! Its virtually impossible to find speakers shallow enough for this car! The only thing that gives me hope is that they are normal size compared to the stock 944 sizes. I bet if i added an amp to power the speakers i would like them alot more. They are nice and balanced...just theres not enough presence at lower volumes. I would love to put a new Alpine head in there...but i actually really like my factory upgraded Las-Vegas Blaupunkt head. It matches the car very nicely, where an Alpine would like aftermarket instantly. Actually im curious, theres a company called Paris Audio or something that makes setups for the new 911s. (advertised in Excellence) I wonder if they are similar sized speaker depths? Maybe those would work! Research time...
