Post low oil pressure

Last night I was running in higher rpms in 4th gear trying to not get lost from a bunch of people and when we finally got off the highway the low oil light would flicker when I would come to a stop or something like that. I noticed that my oil pressure at cruise was around 2-3. I didn't take notice of what it was at idle. Normally it is around 4-5 and 2-3 at idle. Once I got to my destination I checked my oil and it was only 1/2 quart low. I ordered oil filters last night so I can change my oil this week. What else should I do?

Wink

After the engine cools, and you restart the car, does the oil pressure return to normal and then drop again after running for a few minutes?

If it's constantly low, try your sending unit (just below and facing outboard of filter).

Tim, if this is something that just happened then I would suggest removing and inspecting the oil pressure relief valve. If you still have the old style 2 piece valve you may be able to polish the piston and get it to seal again. Make sure there are no foreign objects trapped in the area that might stop the valve from seating properly. Good luck Mark T.

yeah timmy... the oprv is just behind the oil console, down and to the left a bit. i dont have a camera handy to hook up to this comp or i'd get a pic for yah. simple simple thing. check that sending unit too, i think a new one's like 50 bucks, and change your oil too. i hate to see you posting serious stuff. its almost as bad as when amaf was posting nonsense. let us all know how it turns out.

hey if you wanted to swing a trade for your car and a couple grand, we could drive the 85.5 up and limp that thing home. that'd work out nice for both ends

Mine does the EXACT same thing.

Still haven't figured it out, but the other day my oil cooler seal blew. Related? That's yet to be determined.

Check to see if it happens on slow, hard turns too (driving through the 10-15mph side streets before you get to your house, etc.)

PS. If it is indeed the sending unit that causes this, does that mean the engine is actually being starved of oil, or is it just screwing with the gauge?

I'm not sure what to tell you. I'm trying to figure out what's wrong wiht mine.

After a recent front end reseal and oil cooler housing reseal, my oil pressure after, about 20 mins, would gradually drop to 1 bar and the light would come on.

We changed the sender, pressure relief valve, oil filter, and instrument cluster. Same symptoms with every change. The car doesn't leak a drop of oil and it's not mixing. My mech is going everything possible to fix.

When we get this solved, I'll post the results as it may help you.

Streckfu, did you check the torque on the crankshaft pulley (150ft/lbs)? It drives the oil pump. Don't know if it would gradually loose pressure, unless it was somehow backing off as the car ran.
