944 radiator solutions?
#31
NO CAT/IDLE PROBLEM will someone tell me if the cat is replcaed with pipe does the idle get lost on a 86 normally aspirated 944 with stock 2.5 everything exhaust? I would like to try but lean air fuel is a quandry and whether it will cause idle problems is a big concern.

this was just my opinion, that there are some things that I would prefer to be "new" myself

but there might be a difference between a used part form a possible wreck or some kind of failure, unless its local where I can see it and/or know the owner - I wouldn't buy it
also, 86 N/A 5spd radiator is beefier and fits into early cars ... possible solution to all the "cracking" on the sides

I think if you do the wrenching yourself it is always smart to go used. I put a starter on our 2000 Blazer last year and found a good OEM GM one with 60K miles for $45. That was under 1/2 price of the junk they sell at the auto parts store, of which you usually have to change 2 times before you get a good one.

I enjoy trying to re invent the wheel. it kills lots of my valuable time lol. But your correct. Its easier to purchase the correct part.
But my dad is always old fashioned and tries to fix what we have (IE auto radiator in manual car). I know on my old 2.5RS Subaru, my dad fixed the radiator with some gum like adhesive till we got the new one in the mail. It stopped leaking and didn't leak for weeks and then she met her demise by getting rear ended.

As for the used vs. new debate, it is totally dependent on the owner. Would anyone here use a used timing belt? Would I buy a used starter motor? Totally depends. If the starter is a PITA to replace ('99 Isuzu Trooper), hell no. I want to do that job once. On a 944, maybe, it isn't that hard to replace. Radiator is an owner's call. IMHO, I'm not going to spend any money to replace it, if there is a reasonable chance I will have to do it all over again in a year or two.

Some of those parts include, but not are not limited to:
Cooling system parts (radiator, water-pump, hoses, coolant, thermostat)
Clutch
Light bulbs
Gas
Oil
Filters of any type
Belts of any type
My reasoning has nothing to do with driving a "used car".

What tifosiman says... In all my Porsche driving years, I've only been on the side of the road once and I intend to keep it that way. I hate the looks a guy gets on the side of the road...

Anyone put a turbo rad in an NA? The turbo rad is the same width but is about 1 1/2" taller. I realize 2 of the four mounting points will be out of wack due to the difference in height and will require a mod. I'm doing preventive maintenance (new rad, fuel pump, master cylinder) as it's a dedicated track rat.
