A final act of desperation...? What to do...or can I do?
Well...this is the final straw.
Last night, my car started to smoke badly and it poured out its oil. It looks like it is coming from the blue box marked in the picture below. Sorry for the bad picture.

The oil is leaking onto the header and burning, causing a nice smoke cloud. I'm not James Bond, so I don't want a smoke screen.
One minor problem...I'm broke. I do not have the funds to fix it, nor do I have the ability to fix it myself. I'm not the greatest mechanic.
I must get rid of the car...but, once again...a minor problem. I owe $6,600 on it. I forsee myself being layed off at my current job (new owners...bad people I tell ya) and has left me looking for a new job.
Do you think there is any chance in hell I could get that much for it? I don't care if it is a dealership or private sale.
If one of those sales comes along in town, where they rape you in the *** for a 1977 Civic and pay off your vehicle...it's gone in a heartbeat. I must have reliable transportation. My car has left me stranded 3 times. This has to end.

To bad you aren't as slick mechanically as you are with the P.C./Cameras! haha
Are they any fellow rennlisters in your area that could maybe help you out with a repair?
Maybe a case of beer or something might entice them!
Do a weekend deal or something.
I hope all works out with your job, hopefully you won't have to sell.
BTW how much oil did you lose?

Even when it's fixed sell it. You'll get make what you owe on it, and not be stuck with a problematic p-car that will dent your enthuiasm for it severly.
Then when the funds flow in, and things look a little more certain, get another one.
I would hate to have to part with mine, but if it was a case of dispising it on a daily basis, I'd rather give it up, and start with another one in a while, with my enthuiasm still intact.

As for how much oil...it was full and in a few hours, and a short drive (15 mile), I parked it and let it cool down. It was right below the low mark on the dip stick.

That is a cam tower gasket leak, and about $35 in parts and 8 hours labor. It is not that hard to do, just follow the manuals.
It won't be the head gasket because the leak would be under the header.
Someone in Vegas wanna help this guy?

There are quite a few Vegas guys on the board, saw several over on the 944 Turbo & S section. Do a search. The oil leak isn't a huge problem, but I agree, if you can't do your own work, at this time you're probably better off selling it, it should go for more than you owe on it.

I would suggest you take Perry's advice! $35, and 8 hours of work. And if any of the locals can help, barter time maybe, you help with mine, I'll help with yours? Serious, dude, try fixing it yourself, if you have too.

Also - join the normal 924/944 email list (off the main Rennlist page) and post there too. There are MANY people in NV, and a couple I remember from Vegas too who'd be more than happy to help.
Worst case - if you want to ship the car to me, I'll do the work, and then you can come get it. Only issue is that I'm 1 hour north of Boston, MA...

Looks like you're in for and oil cooler seal replacement.
This is do-able for about $40.00 in parts plus some coolant and maybe and oil/filter change. Pelican Parts has a kit, as do several other vendors.

Kierf I'm the kinda guy thats apprehensive about working on stuff under the hood too, but if you're in that bad a situation you really don't have much to lose to atleast try to fix it. If the car was running then I wouldn't suggest it but you might as well try. You could certainly get 6,600 for the car but highly unlikely if it isn't atleast driveable.

I have the same leak, though mine is much slower than that (smokes like hell when I start it after it sits, doesn't do much while driving though). I've been putting off doing this until this winter when I'm in my new house and can pull the cam cover and do a bunch of work.
I can say though, with as bad as I am at working on these things, I do plan to do my own work on this. I've read up on it quite a bit and think that even an in-experienced chum like me can do it, you should look at it as an option.
