Post 70-100mph

Anybody time their 70 to 100 times?

I have an 86 turbo I'm getting ready to rebuild the engine on. On a recommendation I did 70-100 runs to judge my performance and I'm doing an avarage of 3.9 secs. (coast at 50, floor it and start timer @70, and end @100)

Recorded a best of 5 secs flat to 60, but broke an axle after a few launces, so I won't be doing that anymore.

Right now the car's got a 3 inch turbo back open exaust, chips, and a leaking but disconnected wastegate.

I believe the popular way to go about it is from 60 miles/hour to 100.

Yes I know but after breaking an axle I decided to follow Mr. Coppari's suggestion (from pelican BBS), which is to coast at 50 in 3rd, floor it. Start timer at 70, stop timer at 100. This would take out launch, tire spin/shifting out of the equation, and give an accurate assestment of how the car's doing, it's also MUCH easier on the car.

Ahmet, what is the difference between 60-100 and 70-100 other than the time you start the timer.

Reread Third Eye's post.

I thought you would start the test in 2nd, and thus add another variable to the test (shifting 2nd-->3rd). +My car is still building on boost by the time I get to 60 from 50, whereas it's already at full boost by 70mph...

I have no objections to 60-100 runs in 3rd gear, I'll see if I can get somebody to help me time the car before I rebuild the engine (hopefully will start this week). If any of you have done 70-100mph runs I'd like to hear from you in the mean time. Actually, I'd like to hear other 60-100 run times as well, would you guys mind sharing what you're running and with what mods?

I knocked off a couple of 5.2's on stock chips. SO the Factory is pesimistic there

And NO I dont have a drilled Cyclic Valve. And My k26/6 was just that, A k26/6. (sure didn't have any play though!)

Last summer, I timed some highway accelerations under really warm and humid weather using 87 octane gas, here are my results:
60 to 100 mph: 6.1 seconds
60 to 125 mph: 12.9 seconds
I don't know my 70-100 mph acceleration times...

Under cold weather, I obtained a 5.5 0-60 mph time and 13.91@107.9 mph quarter mile time using a G-Tech Pro. I also own a practically stock Porsche 944 Turbo with 225mm crappy tires. I won't do standing start acceleration tests again, I just wanted to have an idea of my times.

There's a couple of us at Pelican who're going to share similar results, here's the tread:

http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=62875&pagenumber=2

If you guys want to share your results feel free.

I don't think I'll try anymore standing starts. Maybe after I do more mods I might attempt a timed 0-60 run, and 1/4 mile at the strip but don't plan to do that or launch the car too many times, maybe a few auto-xes, we'll see...

Yan, my car feels just slightly faster with open exaust and chips @ 65 degrees F compared to how it felt bone stock @ 20 degrees. Difference increases at higher gears/rpms.

Last time out I video recorded the 0-100 at about 10 seconds. If you look at the video clip, 70-100 seems to around 4 sec's.

The video is in the middle of the page.

Note this was with no traction trough 1st and 2nd, 3rd gear starts to hold. I would imagine with better traction at least a second would be knocked off that time.

Goddamn that car is fast!! Did you disconnect your factory boost gauge or something?

Yep. Factory boost gauge is disconnected. Figured it's one less vac line I have to worry about.

JVC,

did you buy that ADJ. FPR from vertex? Mine just came today. Looks just like that one. What turbo are you running?

jvc, I'd also be interested in what type of mods you're running. Judging by the fact that my car'll do 0-60 in 5 secs, and 70-100 in 3.9, I'm going to guess that my 0-100 time can't be too far off 10 secs, and I most certainly don't spin tires in 3rd gear, and usually not too much in 2nd either... And no I don't have sticky tires. Soooo I'm going to guess that either the roads are very slippery where you're driving, or that your torque curve is very peaky...

Lukesilver, the FPR was from Lindsey. Although i'm sure they must be the same.

I'm still running the stock K26/6. In my opinion this turbo is underrated. I see many upgrading to something larger before doing the essentials. I feel better air flow should be the fist priority. i.e. exhaust, intake, heads and then move onto improving volumetric efficiency. Just my take.

over1g, the mods I have so far are relatively light.
3" exhaust from turbo back (no cat with Borla XR1 muffler)
Autoathority MAF (Love the Kit. Never have to play guess work and tune the car)
35 mm Tail wastegate
Running 16-17 PSI
Magnacore wires and a hard pipe
Suspension and traction will be my next target.

I don't think the roads are that slippery, but here in NY it's been pretty cold and I’m sure the tire choice of the previous owner (225's Michelin sports) doesn’t help. Traction control wasn’t that bad before the duel port wastegate, when boost would slower roll on, but now the boost comes on much harder, furiously knocking the wheels loose. It’s kinda frustrating to see all the gauges light up, but only to be standing still trying to find the right amount of acceleration to apply.
