Post This is gonna be expensive...

Driving down the interstate yesterday my cruise control suddenly surged. I pulled back on the stalk a bit firmly - and it snapped off!
AAAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHH!
I gotta bet this is going to be expensive and probably beyond my abilities...
Will I have to pull the sterring wheel (with airbag!)?
Is this fixable?
Of course this happens a few weeks before I go to Hershey - 400 miles by interstate highway

You might find a used switch at either Parts Heaven or 944 Ecology; do a search for their web add'ys to get phone numbers. George B. at 944 Ecology is very cooperative; I've never dealt with Parts Heaven. And I think that all the '88.5 944's use the same switch; my 968 appears to have the same one as my '88 na had.

Jim, back to 'work'....

Here's the deal, you can't just replace the switch (unless you just broke the mechanical instrument), the whole column itself is a "unit" that you must buy (less than 200 from PelicanParts) and a very simple install on a non-airbag car. With airbags? I can not say.

parts heaven is tricky. They always seem to have a huge inventory, but never that one part you need. It's more of a place to "stock up" then to go "searching" Take it easy

Pulling the wheel to get at the stalk is not too difficult, even with airbags. Just be careful.

I disconected the battery and let the car sit for about thirty minutes, just to be sure any residual power would have discharged. There are two torques(sp?) bolts that hold the airbag to the wheel. I don't remember what size. The airbag then comes straight out and can be disconected by pulling the red connector straight out. The steering wheel comes off with a 24mm(I think) socket, with an extension. If I remember correctly the next thing to loosen is the bracket that holds the box that the stalks go into. It is a clamp on the steering column that can be reached from underneath. This box also has a piece that looks like a giant watch spring. This is what provides constant contact(power) for the airbag as the wheel is turning. Before you remove it, mark its position, otherwise you will have to realign it when you put it back together. I think there are three or for plastic connectors for all of the wires. They should come off pretty easily.

Put it back together in reverse order, with the new piece installed.

Good luck.

PS - You should also mark the position of the steering wheel in relation to the splines on the column BEFORE you remove it. Otherwise you will have to play around with it to get it set straight.

If I could get to the break (deep inside the rubber housing) I would probably try superglue!
Thanks for all of the ideas.

Jon, Asheville's every bit as good as the ads say, _for tourists_. But each tourist who becomes a resident degrades that goodness by a small increment. From being a comfortable small mostly Southern town ~35 years ago when I moved here, we've become a divided, faction-ridden city where nothing can get accomplished without first listening to fourteen differing viewpoints, balancing our chakras, and trying to arrive at a consensus that generally fails to accomplish the objective and satisfies no one...gridlock by diversity.

In simpler terms, we have, in a space of two years, been referred to in the national media as the "New Age Capitol of the US," one of the 10 best places to retire, and the Freak Capitol of the US. Go figure....

The newbies see no conflict in hollering for "affordable housing" while trying to stop logging and encourage restrictive housing ordnances...

And while they're spending all this money on nationally-seen tourism ads, our light-manufacturing industrial job base is shrinking almost daily. Economic development? D'uh!

Yep, you hit a nerve....

Like my bumper sticker says, "Don't move here."

Jim, "Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups."

Sorry I haven't responded earlier... and, Jim... I promise to never stay there, but I might visit to see the freak show

I have fixed no less than 5 solid core blinker stalks with the same method [insert cheap *astard comment here]. All you need is a Dremel, two-part Epoxy, and a suitably sized machined screw (really small diameter, maybe 1" long). If you haven't guessed it by now, you're about to become a dental surgeon

Drill/bore holes in each side trying to keep in the very center, but you'll be oversizing the screw by about double if possible... you need enough slack to get the stalk on there as normal... and enough spacial area to make use of the epoxy mixture. Cut the head off the screw and test fit the hole until you find the right combination of boring and screw length. Mix the epoxy, fill the holes and coat the mating surface, insert the screw, hold till dry (or clamp it)[use a screw instead of a nail to get that extra grip from surface area and shape... just like the dentist would]. Should last forever

Or, you could buy a new one

Rotten timing... I just cut the CC lever off my stalk because I deleted the CC and it was just getting in the way of my smaller Sparco wheel. We coulda swapped.

Good Luck!

Thanks Skip - a great fix. I'm assuming you would have to remove the wheel and column shroud to accomplish this?

Not really, but it's fairly simple and would make it easier. You can't get the stalk shroud off without removing the wheel, and you can't get the dust shield off without removing the shroud. You've got the airbag wheel, so that complicates things, but there's a bit of good documentation on Tom Pultz's site [how-to] to help guide you through.

Tom's 944S2.com

Don't forget to stop by the "pit babes" section And, since Tom ripped off my 944 "Save the Flash" pic, I can say that his site rocks! Hi Tom!
