Unhappy Possible tranny problem need advice. Thanks

I am starting to notice a problem with the tranny in my 87 944 n/a. I replaced the original with a turbo out of and 86 about 6 months ago, This does not appear to be the same problem in the other posts that I have read as there it no distinctive ticking sound what so ever. The symptom is that during deceleration I am hearing a distinctive hard mechanical HISSS or SHHHHHH coming from the rear of the car. This is also starting to occur during acceleration but does not seem to effect down shifting nor acceleration in any way. When the car is in neutral and sitting still “Running” Meaning the drive train is spinning and clutch not engaged in a gear I hear a faint mechanical SHHH or very light mechanical “I hesitate to use the word grinding” coming from underneath the front of the rear wheel well. Now I have driven several other 944,s now and do not notice this SHHH at all and am wondering if any of you have experienced this before tranny frailer? The nice part of this is that the tranny has a warranty on it so I still can get it replaced. Oh I shecked the oil level and there is not problem there. And the torque tube was replaced because of need to do so for other reasons. The exhaust system is not the problem all the mounts are fine and are in place as well as the fact that it is new. Please advise I am at a loss. <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

I have never dug into my tranny, so I do not know if there is a pump, or if it is all splash. Since there is an availible cooler, I would suspect that it does have a pump in it.

If it is not gear noise, and it sounds like it is not, perhaps the pump has taken a dump.

Hope some of the tranny guys can jump in here.

Good Luck!

It's my understanding that only the trannys with coolers have pumps. Otherwise, the oil just gets sloshed around from the action of the gears and such. Might you have a bearing going bad in the box??

All 944 transmissions will rattle a little at idle in neutral with the clutch out. As well, you'll hear some odd sounds on low speed coasting in 1st and 2nd gears. Don't worry too much about it.
