How important is the stoneguard behind the front discs (M030)? - Pic
Here is why i ask......
I've got a 944S2 that I have upgraded to M030 front brakes (also known as S4 brakes). I've kept the old steel stone guard behind the disc. They weren't rubbing with the standard M030 discs (the 928S4 undrilled but vented 304 x 32mm) but when I put the new cross drilled discs on tonight (968 clubsport brakes crossdrilled 304 x 32mm) the disc rubs on the steel backing plate!?!. Its close - the difference between rubbing and not rubbing is about 1mm (1/16''?). The backing plate has never been buckled. I tried bending it out of the way but its a kind of springy steel.
I've checked the PET and it seems the same "Cover Plate" is used for both standard and M030 brakes.
Anyone out there with S4 brakes want to chime in?

Three Wheelin'
Just remove them - I don't think they are really necessary (one of mine is missing). They are a bit of a bugger to remove though as the hub needs to be removed, not just the brake rotor.

They do offer some protection (from both heat and debris coming off the rotor) for the balljoint and tie rod rubber boots.
The heat damage is more of a concern for a track car.

The track setup is to run cooling hoses and ducts to a new, fiberglass backing plate. For the street the factory setup is undoubtedly fine.
Here is a picture of my 87 spindle, without the backing plate. You can see the 3" hose in the background. Al Holbert's shop used to sell the ducts and backing plates, then the guy who made the originals was selling them, then I don't know.

Race Car
Paragon sells kits, Pelican sells kits, lots of people sell kits. I made my own backing plates, and bought the ducts from Racer Wholesale for less than $100 total. There is also a thread in the Turbo forum started by a guy who made his own plates, as well. I think he started it this Summer, should be easy to find with a basic search. If you've got a welder, it is pretty easy to do.

Quick question since you are on the subject. I want to add big reds to my 86 turbo, and wanted to know what I needed to buy to do this. Do I need the newer spindles? Ive heard that the 86 and earlier have weak brackets?

Can't speak to that, but I changed to 87 spindles because the axle shaft is larger in diameter. As a result I have a an extra set of 86 spindles with 45k miles with machined hubs to fit VCI hats and a set of mostly used Coleman (NASCAR) rotors.
I've heard of broken hubs and seen the billet hub available. The only broken hub I saw was on a 928 running race tires.
