Anyone use this procedure to fix their hatch? The hatch on my car has the frame seperating so i picked up a used one in better condition but I think since the paint is peeling on it I might try this fix if I get good reports about it here.
Thanks,
Mark

I took mine to my local auto glass shop. I made a tool (notched a standard screwdriver) so he could remove those crazy screws that hold the back window into the frame. He put on a new black border and glued the window into the frame correctly. It looked perfect and it didn't have a crack in the top between the frame and the window. It only cost me $50 plus one screwdriver.

I'll check with some local glass shops but the dealer tried that with the hatch on my car and they didnt think they could get the frame off without breaking the glass so they just stuffed silicone in the seperation. Yep that really fixed the problem.

So does anyone know a glass repair shop in the Chicago, NW Indiana area, that can fix the hatch? Seems no one wants to touch it.
Thanks,
Mark

Mark,
I did buy the 9x hatch fix but ended up doing my own thing. The directions are a little shaky to say the least, (you can download them from the website, it looks almost like they are translated). Anyway the extra seal that they send to fit on the hatch is great and with the addition of a new hatch seal on the car it finally seals 100%. It’s the quietest my car has ever been.
Here is what I did:
Removed the hatch and cleaned it. To remove the wing I purchased a bit (span bit I think) at Sears. I could remove about half of them with a regular screwdriver so I took one in to make sure the span was correct. You could also make your own tool with an old screwdriver and a Dremel.
After the wing and side pieces were removed I cleaned away the grime (and there was alot). Then I purchased a new Exacto knife and some Norton Windshield Urethane from an automotive paint supply store. This was the STUFF, it says right on it not for sale to the general public but this is what you want to use. By the way, make sure you have a very sturdy calk gun, it is so thick I destroyed my first one…
Next I set out cutting away all of the old Urethane. It is on the outside of the hatch, between the glass and the frame but remains hidden behind the wing and side pieces. All of the hatch is this way except for the very top, it seal on the inside of the car. When I was cutting the old Urethane out you could see by the amount of dirt under it that the seal had broken a long time ago and probably has leaked water into the car ever since. Then after cleaning the gap I refilled it with my new Urethane and let it dry for the 24-48 hours.
I then purchased new nuts (ones I could actually get a socket on) and reinstalled the wing pieces. Note: be careful when you tighten these down. The side pieces of the wing have a metal strip in the middle of them that the small bolts attach to. If you were to over-tighten them it would indent the top of the wing.
I did not choose to seal the top of the hatch like the directions from 9x would indicate. I tried several times but the glass would not separate far enough and I was afraid of breaking it. (The directions would have you pry the glass and the frame apart from the inside with a putty knife.) Next I purchased a plane sheet of rubber from a hardware store to fabricate the gaskets for the hatch bolts (that attach it to the car).
Lastly I thoroughly cleaned the hatch pins and adjusted them for the new seals.
Results, It’s wonderful. No exhaust smell or leaks and it’s so nice and quiet. It doesn’t rattle, creek or let in road noise. In addition my little water drains in the wing work now. The water runs straight out the back of the car.
Hope this helps.

before anyone orders stuff from 9xauto, please search the archives. there have been many threads on this... the jist is that they may have some ok products, but everyone associated with that company must be in a non-english speaking country as nothing remotely associated with that buisness is conducted at even 7th grade level english. there is some sketchy stuff going on there for sure and perhaps some borderline product misrepresentation on their site.
i will qualify all this with the fact that i have never ordered from them... but my car is a porsche and deserves the best. and to me that includes products described accurately, correctly, and succinctly in the language that i speak. and thus i likely never will.
there are also a few other good threads that have come to pass contianing various other people's experiences in getting their hatches re-bonded to the frame.

The used hatch i have hasnt seperated from the frame yet but the black "paint" has flaked off and I can see that the adhesive on the inside at the top is not fully attached to the glass. Putting some new adhesive in there doesnt seem to tricky but the only way I can see to cover that from the outside is with some sort of tape on the exterior as the 9x instructions show. Any better ideas for DIY so that it will look good?
Thanks,
Mark
