Question Whats it costing you to be a P-buff?

I was sitting around the other day, thinking about how much I love my car. I have spent a lot of money making her all she can be. I am probably gonna spend a whole lot more, once I give in to the HorsePower virus.

To this point, I have owned 3 P-cars, driven a total of around 125K miles, and spent a grand total of approximately $12,000 US.

I bought my 1st 924 for $1100, it needed nothing I was willing to put money in, and I drove it for almost 50,000 miles. This car was not treated well by me, I have many terrible stories. Sold it for $1800, after working the paint with a buffer for 2 weekends. It did at that point have a creamy froth in the radiator overflow, but the guy who bought it seemed unconcerned.

I bought my 85.5 n/a for $2250, and put tires on it. It had the most horrific rattling when in gear, which became deafening when the car was in gear. 4 hours on a lift with a couple of sockets and screwdrivers, tightening bolts and screws, noise went away completely. Put over 60k on it, sold it for $3500 to a n00b used car dealer who was distracted by the shiny paint and Porsche crest. Never went into the shop once. Never failed to start when I put the key in. New tires were the only major expense.

My 951, purchased for $4800 has had maybe 15k on it since I bought it, driven for mostly "fun" miles. I blew a tire at 145+MPH the first weekend I had it. Damn Pirelli had a hole in the sidewall the size of a fist! All the car did was shudder a bit. New tires, K/N, new sachs clutch and assorted bearings, new oil sending unit, misc repairs, new shift **** and boot, armrest hinge, belts and hoses. By far the most expensive, but also the most rewarding to drive.

Like I said, 11 years of driving, for about $1100 a year, not counting gas and insurance or wax and car care products.

I cant say anything better about Porsche.

I've had mine for 5 months or so, 330 for new receiver, 15.00 for a fuel filter, 380 for new axles/cv kit, 22 for muffler mount, 40 for a new boot, couple front speakers. And in the next month i'll have the 90k service done, not sure by who yet. I just took a 1,100 mile trip and it's the best car i've driven that distance in.

What a bunch of whimps!

Bought an 83 944 that was a total POS in 93. Paid way to much and then keep paying, and paying, and paying... till I had over 10K in it and it was STILL a POS - but it did look nice!

Got smart about 5 years ago and bought an 86 951 in near concours condition, with 64k miles, for 10K. I've put nothing in the car since. Now after several years of being a garage queen we're doing her up REAL nice! New 17" 993 wheels, new Bridgestone S03's, new Koni's all round, new drilled rotors and pads, 968 mirrors and handles, new mats, and new belts to complete the package. Total cost of the upgrades will run around $5k, but the end result is gona be priceless! <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" />

Wish I'd done it a piece at a time, but this "all at once" upgrade will truly transform the car!

Whoops, forgot to add....

I'd like to thank my sponsor - my lovely wife Joyce, who said to me when I told her what I was spending, "That's nice dear, tell the rest of the kids I said Hi!" Gotta love that woman!

Sounds like I'm following in your footsteps, except for the car looking good part!

Hey Tim,

My 83 944, when I first got it, was voted the "Ugliest 944 in the Lone Star Region PCA" - how's that for homely!

Just before I sold it (at a HUGE loss I might add) it took 3rd place in a local concours.

I'm sure I could win that with a land slide.

I don't plan on getting it painted anymore. Just gonna get the turbo or 968.
