suspension 84 944
I have a creeking sound in the suspension right now that I can really hear when I turn to the left at slow speeds, any ides??
Also, I want to put different springs in there.. I have Knoi shocks till they went out and I didn't have the money to replace them. I'll put the orange konis in there unless anyone has a better idea. This will be a weekend/PCA track event car, however I do like a very tight suspension even on the road. Can anyone tell me what spring rates to use and how much to lower it to look right and perform better? (I already had the back end lowered to the correct european height)

Sounds sorta like a ball joint issue - at least it sounds EXACTLY like MY ball joint issue. Replaced em with SSI units and all's well now. You might want to get the wheels in the air and check for play sometime soon.

Ball joints are inexpensive and fairly straight forward to replace on the early 944's -- steel arms.
Could be bad bushings too. Not only in the arm, two places, but also the sway bar.
If the front suspension on you car has never been touched, except possibly for shocks, then it's most likely due for a rebuild.

Heck ball joints are about $12 each.
Easiest thing to is to get new control arms also. Since they are steel the are cheap. The original ones have the ball joints rivited on and you would have to replaced.
Best thing. Get 2 new control arms $100 total. These come with new stock rubber bushings also. Then get two new ball joints $24 total. Install as complete asseblies.
Procedure is the same this one involving bushing replacement. Note you can go with either the stock rubber bushings or the hard plastic ones. Stock should be fine for most applications.
{edit... for track cars the plastic weltmeister bushings are better and I RECOMMEND REPLACING the control arms as I noticed that I craked both of mine!)
Steps:
Lift car
Remove sway bar (4 places)
Removed Fwd engine cross member bolt.
Remove rear caster block (two bolts)
Make sure to support spindle with floor jack now since this heavy.
Remove bolt at spindle to control arm attachment.
Tap control arm to free it.
Either replace ball joint on arm or replace entire arm.

I've got a pretty consistent squeek/creeking sound coming from what I believe are my shocks on the front of my 84 944. I haven't had my car up yet to take the wheels off and whatnot, anyone got any ideas what I might want to look for first? As far as I know, the suspension has never been off of the car.
