I am a first time Porsche buyer and I am considering a 1984 Porsche 944. What should I be looking for and what questions should I be asking? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

What kind of mileage? Standard/Auto?
Check for service records and make sure everything is well documented (I made the mistake of not doing that and am paying for it now

Go to www.clarks-garage.com and you will find a section that will tell you all of the "trouble" areas to look for. Good luck in your search. Be forewarned, these cars are addictive
. You have also made a right step in finding this board. Very helpful. This board is a major contributing factor to the purchase of my 944 (also an '84).

One more thing, don't let milage scare you too bad, provided the routine maintence has been kept up. My car just pulled 123hp to the rear wheels on Sunday. And that is a stock motor with over 200k miles on it.

You might want to give "Porsche Quest" a try. Its through Porsche Club of America, basically they help you find the car you want through the club. You can usually find a better kept car in PCA than you can through local papers. (anyone who pampers a 944 is usually a PCA person...) Just make sure you know EVERYTHING about the car. Have Porsche do a PPI (pre-purchase inspection) on the car in full. Try to get the FULL history on the car. How often maintenance was done, and try to see reciepts if available. Find out where the car was serviced and talk to them about the car. I called up the dealership that was doing the inspection in mine (it was 3 states away)and talked to the people there while they inspected the car so i could hear everything from them before the owner had a chance to see the results. Just make sure the car has a strong mechanical history. Looks arent everything, you can clean a car up, but a bad engine is going to kill the car eventually. Find a well mechanically kept car if you can.

Not only does the odo gear greak but the early 944 odo only goes to 99999. Some documentation is useful but the important maintenance is what was done most recently. I wouldn't care if a timing belt was neglected 75000 miles ago, I care about the one that's on there now. 84 944's will most likely have had several (many even) owners by now so records may not be complete but inspection and your own feelings may tell you what you need to know. Do try to look at several cars though. When I sold my 84 several years ago I saw all its flaws. Later on I started seeing early 944's with very ratty interiors and I realized how good mine really was. At least I know it went to a good home.
