Question 968 purchase

Hey all.. first time poster here. I'm a proud owner of an '83 944, but I am looking to sell it to upgrade to a 968. I've tried looking around, but I haven't been able to find a decent, reliable source to compare the different models. Nearest I can tell there is the 968, 968CS and 968 Turbo S. I basically want to know if there is a 16V version ala the 944S2, or which is the fastest street production model of the 968 out there. Thanks for your help!

the 968 uses pretty much the same motor as the 944s2 except it adds variocam (variable valve timing). this means that a regular 968 already is a 16v motor. i think cs cars are just lighter versions with less stuff in em and possibly the m030 parts but i really don't know these specs too well so let someone else speak on that. as for your third choice, good luck finding a turbo. they were made in very limited numbers and i don't think any of them made it to the states

All US 968's are 16V models. 3.0L 16V 236hp, 6 speed manual or 4 speed tiptronic. Try to find one with the M030 suspension and a limited slip differential.
The CS (Club Sport) was never imported here, the UK also got a Sport model. It was the Clubsport version with more comfort/luxury options. The Turbo S was very limited production (14 or 15 cars). The Turbo RS was even rarer. If you could find one prepare to pay as much as a small home. The factory pulled the plug on the 968 Turbo because of low sales numbers and the fact that it was capable of kicking the 911's a$$. Spend some time on 968net and you'll find out alot about the 968.
Good luck finding one, I'll be looking for one myself eventually.

The motor improvements were much greater than just the Variocam addition over the S2 motor; under piston oil squirters; lighter forged rods and pistons; (which allowed the removal of the 5.5 lb crankshaft damper), slightly higher compression. This let the motor rev 400 rpm higher than the S2. All this added up to the significant hp increase over the S2.

Well, it was the first of the 4 cyl waterpumpers to be built at Porsche-which led to the high list price, which killed the car!!

"I believe the contemporary press said the 968 was the first water cooled porsche that deserved to wear the porsche badge"

Part of the reason for that is the journo who took the 928 S4 out for a spin hasn't come back yet.

Thank you all so much for your input. I believe I am going to try and find a basic 968 (preferably '95) and get a turbo from SFR (Speed Force Racing) to add on. Anyone heard of these guys. They claim 100 hp from the 968 kit. They also have 944 kits... I thought about doing that with the 944 I have now, but want to embarrass the rice burners, NOS-injected's, the 5.0's, the SS sports and most of all the snooooooty 993 doctors and lawyers ;o) A nice 350 hp 968 might do that..... might....

Here's a list of tuners that do turbo & supercharge conversions for the 944/968:

Buy an S2 (preferably mine-see the classifieds) for half to two thirds the cost of a decent 968, and spend the difference in mods. You'll get 95% of the potential performance, and 100% of the real world performance that you want, for significantly less money.
