Post Thermostat seal?

I just did the oil cooler gasket job, and I am bringing it to a mechanic to flush the coolant system out. He says it would be best to also do the thermostat seals due to the fact that the oil contaminated the coolant? Is this true or is it BS?

Honestly....I would check everything just in case since the system is going to be drained anyway.

Since the gaskets failed and you got a mix, I wouldn't run it without checking the whole cooling system. But in any case, even if the thermostat itself had to be replaced along with the seal, the thermostat should be NO more than $20 (usually $10-15), and the seal is less than a dollar.

The tech probably figures why not since it's being flushed anyway, the seal is cheap, and it's always good to keep a check on your thermostat. Yet another of those wonderful $10-20 parts that can cost you an engine if it goes at the wrong time.

Oh yeah, and you might want to take off the coolant reservoir tank and clean it out really well b/c flushing might not get it all.

I'm sure there are others that will see this and add anything I have forgotten.....or correct anything I have screwed up on ;-) Good luck...

Ahh ok. I'll have him check it out at least, though the thermostat itself was replaced literally days before the oil cooler seals blew.
Thanks for the infos.
