Default I need thoughts on 924S suspension upgrades.

I am considering suspension upgrades and wanted some input.

I have an 87 924S riding on 225/45/15 tires, which fit easily with the late offset turbo wheels and a 1/4" spacer on the front. The suspension is currently as follows: Bilstein Sports (non adjustable), 250 lb Weltmeisters coils, 26.8mm front sway and 18mm rear, torsion bars are stock. In our region I pay points for the springs and sways so I am thinking since I already take them, why not maximize them? Currently my handling is very neutral with no surprises, but there still is a bit of roll when cornering. I have not yet indexed the rear down which I plan to do.

In talking to the 944's folks two classes above me it seems they are all running 350lb -400lb coils and 28-30mm torsions. Some have adjustable sways and others don't. What I am considering is changing to 350 coils and a 28mm torsion set, perhaps adding front swaybar mount braces, I hope to eventually add adjustable camber plates but that will depend on what I can afford (and when I can afford it). But I figured I would start with the Torsion and coils.

Thanks in advance for the thoughts.

M,

Do the front swaybar mount braces now. I found out the hard way. Cheap insurance. At the very least pull the bolts where the bracket attaches to the chassis and look for cracks between the bolt holes. That bracket is 20+ years old and doesn't owe anything.

Isn't the 924s a tad lighter than the 944? What about bushings? My originals were pretty sloppy, especially the back of the a-arm.

944 spec cars run 350-400 springs front. These are 2.5" springs with camber plates and adjustable ride height. Most run 30 mm rear t-bars, but some like 28's. I ran 350 front and 28 rear and never felt the car was balanced well. I perfer the balance with 30's.

I run the weltmeister adjustable sway bars. These are nice to fine tune the balance. Adjusting the rear is a 10 minute job and can be done on the ground. Front adjustment requires removing the front tires.

Thanks guys! I someday hope to move to adjustable sways but just cant afford it currently (man I need a sponsor...or a sugar mama! lol) I have a possible line on 30mm T bars and will try gather things for the change over.

Doug: Fortunatly the PO installed the 26.8MM front sway about 2 years ago, so things have been looked at fairly recently, but I will check.

Joe P. Once you went to 30mm's did you stay with the 350lb coils or ...?

I apreciate the input. :-)

I'm a fan of bushings since they are cheap and easy. The weltmeister black poly bushings for a 911 rear 18mm swaybar are a direct fit. If you use the original steel front control arms, the black poly bushings from Energy Suspension for a VW rabbit are the best thing going and way less expensive than the weltmeister crap.
+1 on the above suggestion for rear swing arm bushings and some good spring plate bushings will get you a nice platform. Racers Edge front-inner delrin swaybar and poly outer front swaybar bushings are cheap and easy as well. Don't forget adjustable rear swaybar drop links they helped my 924S a good bit. Top strut mounts of the spherical bearing variety are need on most of these cars too. Proper alignment and corner balance after all is done is critical.

are you autox'ing or tracking? if you are autox you have the right setup currently- 350lb springs will be too stiff. If you are track then yeah time to upgrade.
