Post Another ebay nightmare

I put my RX7 on ebay last week. a guy from 60 miles away makes a reservation on tuesday to see the car saturday. I throw his number away figuring he will never call to confirm.

A guy from a few states away e mails me and asks me what it will take to end the auction early. i e mail him a number, and he replies with a number just a little lower. what am i running two auctions?

the guy from 60 miles away calls on friday to confrim saturday. i tell him about the offer from the other guy, and not to bother coming unless he can match the number.

he shows up, drives the car and gives me cash. i follow him home in the car, and take a train back.

i tell the other guy i ended the auction, and like a fool tell him the amount, which was what we discussed. next thing i get is an email that he would have gone $300 higher.

Now the killer.

Today the guy e mails me that i defrauded ebay, and he is reporting me, etc. because i owe them a comission on the amount sold. ebay charges a flat $40 to insert a car, and $40 when it is sold.

I thanked him for keeping me on the straight and narrow. What an ***. first he wants me to end the auction early, then when i end it for someone else he throws a hissy fit.

MORAL OF THE STORY
Don't negotiate ending the auction early. if someone shows up with cash, negotiate when you are looking at the cash. otherwise, just let it roll.

If you had a reserve up that wasn't met you can end the auction at any time as per ebay rules. Also if I remember correctly you may have your vehicle up in multiple listings in different publications. Which means if it sells before the auction ends you can end the auction because the automobile is no longer available. Do not know if this helps

Hey Tom "I would have given you $600 more than that".
It is easier to say this when I know the car is sold. You have to look after #1 (yourself)

You have every right to end the auction early. If you look at auctions placed by car dealers, you will notice they say "WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO END THIS AUCTION EARLY". That is in case someone off the street visits their brick & mortar and makes the purchase.

Sounds like that guy is bitter or something.

Talking abut ebay tools.

<a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=6210&item=2414831995" target="_blank">http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=6210&item=2414831995</a>

A dodge Diplomat S-type.

Please give me a break guy. Just because someone puts an "S Type" sticker on the car may work for a honda, but not a diplomat.

On a similar note. Just about every Diplomat and Grand Fury I saw was a "Police Package"

If they had been a 360 police package I might consider it.

I posted that I have the right to end the auction early, and i did.

if the bitter guy didnt suggest i end the auction early, i probably would have wanted more from the actual buyer. Mr. Bitter offered me a quick out, no delivery hassles, has the same car with 200k, is an adult, etc. which reminded me of hogs and pigs. i decided to be a hog, and made him a fair offer.

Untier,
I will contact the buyer, and tell him of your most generous offer. No, wait, Ill put my Porsche on ebay, and apply your 650 to that. OK.

It just pisses me off that this guy became such a tool as soon as he found out he f'd up. I feel real bad for the couple that looked at the car in late march, and I told them I would give them the car for almost 1,000 less than I got just to get rid of it. They were looking for an RX7 convertible for two years, they said mine was by far the cleanest they saw, and didnt want to pay over book! I think it sold for about 150% of high retail book!

<a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2412888280" target="_blank">ebay auction. reserve was 6,777 and was met when i sold car.</a>

If the guy asked you how much you'd take and you told him a figure, and then he offered you less, HE'S A DICK! End of conversation. At that point he basically tried to screw you for being an honest guy. Happens all the time, I know, but that's when us good guys have to say somwthing witty like, uhm, let me think... oh, I know: "F*ck off!" You have my permission to use that, if you like.

I still cant understand how some people can write a check for thousands of dollars on a major piece of machinery with thousands of intricate parts and potential bugaboos without every seeing the car, driving the car, kicking the tires, or even going one step further and getting a PPI. I dont know. Just boggles my mind. I dont blame anyone for trying to sell a car on EBay, but I cannot fathom purchasing a car on there thats not within a short enough drive that I can actually see and drive the car first. My policy when I read anything is to read every last letter of it but dont believe any of it until I can verify it with my own two eyes.

Maybe Im just not as cavelier with my money but buying a car online sight unseen would scare the living daylights out of me. Now, selling one online would be a completely different story.

So the good new is, you sold your car because of Ebay. Am I right? Any problems with the details aren't an e-bay nightmare.

UD,
Thats why i sold it to the guy with cash. Before I put it on ebay a guy from the RX7 board came over to look at the car at night. I told the guy I would not discuss price until he saw the car in the daylight for the same reasons you mentioned.

i didnt want to agree on a price so the guy could then tell me the scratch i showed him is bigger then he realized etc.

what if the winner flew in with $300 less cash than bid. do i send him back and start from scratch?

Tom,

Although not vehicle-related, I had a similar incident happen to me on Ebay. I was selling some merchandise that a couple of people were quite interested in. One guy offered to buy it outright and even pick it up from me. The other guy also made me an offer but I would have to ship it.

Well when he found out about it he began spouting the "fair use" rule or something of that sort. Telling me that he'd never buy from me.

Oh well...

Then there are people like me, that when buying something I ask "Is that your best price." I only ask it once and if its not low enough I just move on.
I find that my way works better with the potential for return business (materials, etc..). That way you will probably not buy from them that time, but next time you need to restock, and you ask them for a quote again, they will understand that you are not trying to work them down and only want to know the final price first.

I won't believe any seller's claims about how wonderful their car is unless they've already had a dealer's PPI and post the results as part of the auction package. Com'n... we're talking about a $200 expense as part of selling a multi-thousand dollar item, and the cost can be recouped in the selling price. They want my bid? Show me some 3rd party verification of your claims. Why would a seller expect a potential buyer to play silly-arsed long-distance games, trying to juggle a PPI appointment with the seller's availability?

Jim, not buying cars on ebay....
