Default Anyone cut & install their own carpet?

I don't mean installing a molded set. I mean, cutting your own pieces, putting padding down, and gluing it in.

I've done it on kit cars. Considering it for the 944. I am attempting to do a budget carpet replacement.

yes, it isnt terribly difficult to do but just takes time and patience.

this is an excellent opportunity to replace all the insulation as well

I tried it too - and while your mileage may vary - I'd say it's not worth it as I replaced the carpet after 1 year with a decent set from a 924. To compare - the effort in cutting/planning/fitting took 2 days, and a lot of swearing. Removing my made carpet and fitting the factory carpet took a day and was pretty straightforward.

Personally, I wish there was a cheap option to buy remanufactured carpet - but for the time and money cost I'd go with a good used carpet.

I'm getting ready to do this on two different cars too. Niether are 944s though that have the somewhat special rear hatch piece. It seems to me that duplicating that piece would be the most difficult part as it has a bonded, injected rubber base. Aside from that though the material seems like pretty small cost, the labor will be the killer and I'm thinking a industrial sewing machine will be needed. Not sure but I don't think Porsche used molded carpet.
If you decide to do it - post pics so we can all learn.

PS... I bought a 944 carpet kit once, to me it looked ike $20 worth of carpet with about 10 minutes of sewing work but cost over $300. YMMV... bruce

Actually I think it's the insulation that's making my car smell, well, you know, that musty damp smell. The carpet itself is in decent shape. I think the insulation held moisture and it's completely frayed.

What can I use for replacement insulation. JC Whitney stuff or is there something better I should be using?

Correct, Porsche didn't originally use molded, but the aftermarket is providing molded pieces now.

Now I am thinking of just removing the carpet. Hosing it down, maybe giving it a little dye (but it's already pretty black), then reinstalling it after putting down some new insulation.

look for big upholstery supply stores for a greyish pad material in "40oz" weight, i have that and it does the same job of noise insulation at like 1/10 the weight

I created a custom rear seat delete carpet set for my 951. I started working with a manufacture, who makes kits for 911's and wanted to create a carpet set for the 944 series but was difficult as we were thousands of miles apart and i'm fairly particular with my work. Ultimately I ended up with an RS style, rear seat delete carpet kit that I cut and had sewn. If you do a search with my name you should find a thread I started.

Page 5 of the thread has the link to a PDF that will help you.

I finished my carpet install recently and used a product called Hushmat. It works great for sound deadening and heat insulation. Simply peel and stick.
