Post What is this part? (really ugly picture)

Hi!

I did my oil change today and I noticed this REALLY worn bushing. My powersteering rack is leaking BADLY so I guess it doesn't help.

- What part is it exactly?
- How much does it approximatively cost?
- Is it dangerous to run with this problem (low-high speed)?

I can hear a "clunk" when turning at low speed in my driveway.

Thanks for you help!

That is the front sway bar bushing. That would be the clunk you hear, the bar hitting the metal bracket. paragon has them, I think for around 5-8 bucks, really cheap.
I would fix it soon, but you can still drive it, but i wouldn't auto-x or anything

I use poly bushings for the sway bars. In your case the extra oil will lubricate it so it won't squeek.

you really need to look after the PS leak. The PS fluid will rot all the other rubber suspension bushings in time. The sway bar bushing is easy to replace - not so easy for the others though!

Mine looked like that until I replaced my leaking steering rack and PS hoses last week. Changed tie rods and sway bar bushings. It's like a old new car... did some cleaning while under there too.

I found another leak in the vicinity of the oil cooler or upper balance shaft cover so still some projects left.

Have fun!

It's easier with the rack out as it allows better access to crossmember, pan, etc, for cleaning. I first used STP foaming engine cleaner to loosen the big stuff, & sprayed it off with water under pressure, repeat as needed. I used stiff plastic and small brass scrub brushes where needed, and just took some time with rags and small detail brushes (tooth brushes)to finish it up. I also did the spindles, control arms, inner fenders while I was in the zone... it still needs some work but I'll be back in there for the oil cooler seals this weekend.

Castrol Purple Clean diluted 1:1 with water and a nylon brush works great for dirt and funk. Rinse with water and wipe dry. Follow with brakekleen and more rags. Looks like new!

I saw Carl's underbody first-hand. It is CLEAN. BTW just got the new tie-rod in today Carl, IT IS TIGHT (literally). I will be under the car Thursday evening to install it! Hopefully I'll have an aligned car by Friday afternoon!!!
No word on a wheel or the sway bushings, I'm supposed to drive to Florida then on up to SC in about 2 weeks....Hope I find a wheel by then!!!

Are you getting the alignment done at Firestone? I still haven't got my alignment done! Can't seem to find a knowledgeable/reasonably priced wrench in Austin! Another Austin Rennlister, Surya Ganguly, has tried two alignments but can't get proper rear camber adjustment (both places tell him camber is adjusted by ride height adjusment). He paid $95.00 for his alignment.

I'm going to give Franky at the Northcross store a try today.
