Talking nova

I will be in the northern Va area for the next two weeks. I know I will try to get out to Allsports at least once during my time up there.(I should have more time because I don't think my block and parts will be in intime ) It would be great if we could get a group of NOVA/MD/DC people together to do a mini grad prix or something. If you all have never been to this place it kicks *** and is well worth the money. Just post here if you're interested. www.allsportsgp.com

so are there no northern Va/DC/Md people or do you all not like karting. just in case you don't know, THESE ARE NOT GO KARTS LIKE YOU DRIVE AT THE BEACH. These things will beat any Porsche and are what F1 drivers use to train.

And eurospeed951 gets the award for most followups to his own post. Congrats.

The karts you are talking about might barely be able to beat a Porsche on an autocross course, but that is about it.

I don't think too many F1 or CART drivers spend much time behind the wheel of a Honda GX160 4 stroke kart. They either drive 125cc gearbox karts with 40+ hp weighing 200 lbs or 100cc direct drive reed/rotary valve 2 stroke karts with 32+ hp weighing 140 lbs.

THIS will own just about any car on a track with straightaways less than 1/4 mile long. It will run 1:16's at PIR without the festival curves and 1:34's on the old SIR configuration, and that is with it only hitting about 120mph on the straightaways. Probably has something to do with 2.5+ g's of cornering force. Of course, make a few changes, strap another 125cc cylinder on, a wing or two, and you could qualify mid-pack at a Formula Atlantic race. OTOH, put the above kart on a kart track, shorten up the final gearing, and it is very similar to driving a cart or f1 car, only the speed/size of everything is scaled down.

The standing starts are one of the coolest things you can do. 20 karts lined side by side, first gear engaged, throttle floored, brake on, clutch at friction point so that kart is shaking like a ****, ready to fight like hell once they drop the starter flag.

I just sold the last of my 125cc shifterkart stuff this last weekend. I am kicking myself for doing it and know that I will be back into it in a few years. I'm sure that in the meantime I'll have to do an arrive and drive shifterkart race or two to tide me over.

Well, one like above, brand new, with all the goodies like data acquisition, digital programmable ignition, fully built high compression motor, etc, should be about $10,000-$12,000. That will get you a kart that can compete on a national level and be within few tenths of pole with the proper driver and tuning. You can buy a good used package that will be similar for about $5000. If you don't have much racing experience, a slower kart would be a good idea so that you learn how to carry speed through corners, rather than just relying on the gears and horsepower. You can get these used for as little as $2500 for a decent used kart.

I know there is a track in Cuddybackville, NY called Oakland Valley Raceway Park. If you really are interested, go to ekartingnews.com and read up. Don't forget to look at the forums.
