Default painting bear metal?

Im painting a car that was recently sandblasted and i was wondering if anyone had experience with painting bear metal. What surface prep, sealers, primers and paints should i use to get a perfect paint job. Also where does everyone get there products from?

What is this bear metal you speak of, link to vendor?

Otherwise... BARE metal can be sprayed with a quality self etching primer to seal it... or it can be chemically treated with a number of treatments to alter the surface of the metal to resist corrosion...

http://www.boeshield.com/ if not planning to paint

A number of different product mentioned here

http://www.duplicolor.com/products/selfEtchingPrimer/ a cheap, decent self etching primer...

http://www.google.com/products?hl=en...ed=0CFYQrQQwAg both brush on and spray on self etching primers available...

Eastwood.com is a great source for all things auto body related, JC Wittney has some stuff as well... or if you have a local auto pain supply store... they can aide you with selecting a product to reach your end goal...

I dont think bears take too kindly to being painted.

It isn't so much the paint they mind, as the proximity of the painter.. now I am sure they would be fine if you could do it from a reasonable distance!

OK, my coworker has a suggestion... It appears to him that you are speaking Craigslitean, so perhaps you should list your question on Craigslist to see if anyone there might be able to help.. Just remember, you will get better responses if you use no punctuation and make sure you press caps lock first!

Sorry Max, we cant help ourselves...

If it's summer you can use a regular primer and then paint. If it's going into hibernation I would use a cold galvanize spray and no paint. Tape off the nose so it doesn't get clogged.

Aside from the bear bit. I agree with the all the above. Bare metal needs to be prepped before painting and thats where primers come in. If the metal is body work I'd go with a sandable primer to get a nice smooth surface paint ready.

I sanded my race car down to bare metal (in places) and then primered, wet sanded and painted with a single stage paint. Came out good for a race car.

Just a note about etch primers: the responses above refer to an etching (or 'acid wash') primer as a first layer because ordinary primers don't bond to bare metal very well.

Also, when working with etch primers, I've found that I need to let them fully dry before recoating with a sandable primer, or I have adhesion problems.

Epoxy primer apply that over the bare metal, do 3 coats and wait till it flashes (roughly 15 min) but make sure it is cleaned and no rust present.... use a tack cloth to clean surface or you can use a mircofiber towel with windex...

Once primer is done let it sit atleast 24hrs before sanding, then sand with 320-400grit, then 600 grit, then to make it easy you can use a urethane sealer, then wait for flash then apply color (3 coats waiting 15min between each) then clear that baby.

ive noticed a lot of professional painters use an epoxy primer and then a urethane primer over it.
