Post Random Hesitation & No Throttle Response

Paraphrase - crossposted @ 944 Turbo & S - put here for wide audience.

Hi all,
Well, I just picked up a 86 951 in White w/ 67k original mi (verified) last night. The car test drove well, and drove the 20mi home great.

Started it back up and drove around (another 60mi or so), and at first it hesitated and just died momentarily so badly, we thought it was out of gas and the gauge was wrong. So I went home and put a few gallons in it from my reserve. Worked fine to the gas station, at which point I put some 92 in. The car only took 10gal, so the gas gauge is fine.

Driving around, it would randomly just die and come back to life whenever it felt like it. Sometimes, immediately, sometimes after a minute or so.

I had this same problem on my 968, and I figured it was the DME relay, so I replaced that and all is well with that car now.

So, I swapped the verified-working DME relay from my 968 into the 951, and the same problem.
the problem comes up seemingly randomly.

When the problem occurs, the car runs, but loses all power, and any change in throttle nets no rev change. Sometimes, I can alleviate the problem by taking the car out of gear and then pushing the throttle. It's as if no fuel is being delivered.

Any other easy fuel delivery problems like relays, etc. or sensors known to go bad before i go into the messy, stinky & dizzying world of swapping out the fuel pump?

Thanks.

BTW, anyone here happen to be interested in a tricked out Scirocco for a good price? http://www.corradocentral.com/scirocco.htm

Might be a stretch but we had a similar problem with our '84 944 and it was the wire from the coil to the distributor cap shorting out against the hood.
Could also be a fuel delivery problem, pump getting flakey or filter mostly clogged.
