Angry water in rear passenger carpet

i have searched the discussion forum for this problem and i'm wondering if anyone found a definitive answer! the rear passenger side floor is drenched with water. i have checked all the obvious places for a leak, but no success. i'm going right now to use the garden hose to see if i can find where the water is entering from. the seat is dry, the side carpeting is dry, but the floor is WET!!! any suggestions?

yeah, check the seals at the top of the hatch for any gaps. And check the sunroof drains. Since it isnt getting the sides wet, it makes me think that the water is dropping straight down, ergo the seals at teh top ot the hatch.

No one has reported back on findings for this rear carpet problem.

My guess, and only a guess, is that it is slosh or soak from the front. A battery box leak.

One overlooked possibility... from what I've read, if the rear side windows have been out at any time (sometimes done while installing rear speakers), the seals may have been damaged or poorly re-installed.

Or there's the ever-popular blocked / loose / missing sunroof drain-tube(s)...

Do you remember how you had it parked when it rained? My car leaked a little bit from the battery box (incidentally--is there a good fix besides silicone?), but when I parked on a hill with the noise up I started my morning off with all of my CDs on the back right carpet submerged by a few inches of water. <img src="graemlins/cussing.gif" border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" /> Fixing this leak is my next project, now that my car's shiny again.

The front carpet wasn't really wet. It all just sloshed straight back.

I had your same symptoms, floor wet, sides & seats dry when it rained very hard. It was the sunroof seal. Replaced it and it's been dry ever since....

See if the rubber drain in the gas filler door area has been pushed down. If it has then when the car is washed, water is going in that hole and into the area between the outer sheet metal and the inner door panel on the right rear side.

hosing the car didn't solve the problem. thought it may be the hose coming from the small hole by the gas cap, but that runs free. its supposed to rain tomorrow, so was thinking of parking with the nose of the car raised......in case it was coming from the drain hoses on that side. tinman944, let me know if you come up with any ideas since you have the same problem.

I to have had problems with H20 in the rear passenger floor. I have been through everything from the rear hatch ( I re-laminated it), new sunroof and hatch seals and it would still flood. I finally took the carpet and seats out and let it sit in the rain. What I discovered on my car was the battery box was the culprit. With the carpet removed I could watch it run in. The front foot well seems to be double walled so the water didn't appear until the area where the passenger seat bolts in. From there it would run to the back footwell never making the front portion of the car wet at all! (very deceptive)

So check your battery box with a hose. My suggestion would be to remove the hood and battery so you can see what your working on..

Sorry to be so long, good luck.

My '83 has the same problem. I found the metal elbow on the drain hose from the gas fill was cloged, and the water that sat there would find it's way to the top of the wheel well and fall to the passenger foot well if the car was level or nose down. When I removed this piece of metal from the rubber that it sets in, I toar the rubber a little and it still leaked untill I sealed the tear. If you remove the carpet from the wall of the hatch, you can reach your hand below the gas fill and feel for water as you pour water over the gas cap. You can easily test the sunroof drains... pour water in slowly and watch for water to drain out the bottom of the car (rear drains) or under the hood above the front fender (front drains). The gas drain hose was my problem. Good luck, and remember that some mold can be dagerous to breath, if you carpet is getting moldy because of the water, spray some lisol on it or something that will kill the mold.

hey mallen, i had the same problem for the longest time. i had the roof seal and hatch seal replaced only to find out that the seals werent the problem. the headliner trim thats behind the sunroof is the next thing that i looked at. once i removed it, i noticed that the rubber/plastic tube that acts as the drain, was not connected to the actual sunroof drain. the water was running down behind the back seat interior panel close to the window and then down into the carpet. once i "plugged" the hose back in, i havent had a problem with water since. chances are (from everyone that i have spoken to about this problem) your sunroof seal isnt bad. try looking at the drain connection right behind your sunroof, you might be surprised.

Hey tinnman, turn recirculate switch to off, turn a/c or fan wide open, shut windows and doors tightly, and squirt soapy water from a bottle in suspect areas.
Bubbles should appear where air escapes from the cabin...
Chances are that's where your water's coming in....

Cheers
