Post Transmission kick back

Greetings!

Question for you Porschephiles:

When I use my engine to slow down ( going down a hill or from high speed ), it seems as if the transmission on my 924S will physically "kick" up thus making a mild thump noise against the housing ( One thump only...just one ).

Is this caused by loose mounting bolts, or does the rubber donut require replacement?

Thanks in advance!

Dude, sounds like you need a new transaxle mount. Does it feel like a boat coming off the power when you let go of the throttle?

ps, keep reading rennlist, we're gonna have a really big pacific northwest getogether here in BC one of these days (hopefully sooner than later )

Thanks for your input!
She drives pretty tight coming off the throttle. It's just the noise that has me concerned. I far prefer loose mounting bolts, to a busted clutch anytime!

Count me in! I vote for meeting in vancouver, and then cruising up to whistler for a night. That's a beautiful drive in the summer!

I saw a big PCA show up there, by accident, a couple years ago. I was up for a bachelor party, and the whole village was overrun with porsches, it was perfect. Does the NW PCA do a drive up there every year? I suppose I should join so I can get in on events like that.

oh yeah...

The PCA clubs for PacNW (US) and Canada West have what's called "Whistler Weekend" every year. This year the dates are August 23-25.

This draws quite a few participants from all over the Northwest, as there's a Friday meet-n-greet banquet "Beers and Brauts", Saturday concours (on the walkways of the lower village), and Autocross on Sunday (upper lift parking area). The walking rally last year was quite fun... from what I remember of it There's a Concours banquet Saturday night, and Autocross banquet Sunday night.

Apparently, the details are not available yet for this years event, but you can watch the host regions website for details: PCA - Canada West Region

There's some pictures on the Tech-Session site that I took from last years event:

try filling your trans mount with "3m window weld"
I did it to mine and it made a great improvment.
You should be able to buy this at autoparts stop that sells auto body stuff. Make sure you use 3m window weld and not just silicone, as silicone will not harden as much like window weld....

Sorry to have gone Off-Topic on you and not offering any advice... so, here ya go:

Might not be the tranny or CV's at all... but, might be the clutch:

- the clutch has a rubber center as standard (unless upgraded to spring-center)
- the rubber is known to fail after many years/miles, leaving the clutch to engage the drive shaft on the cog teeth directly (without the aid of rubber)
- this can cause what's commonly referred to as "driveline lash". Especially when decelerating, the cogs will smash causing your noise, then run in that position until the momentum changes direction... e.g. you step on the gas to go again.
- to check for the rubber - lift rear of car, clutch engaged, transmission in neutral, parking brake off - remove the rubber inspection plug from the front of the transaxle (trapezoidal shape), reach in and try to turn the driveshaft... if it moves more than a degree, you have a failed rubber center.
- if the rubber is failed - there are two dangers: 1. pieces of the rubber can lodge in the disc area and cause a no-shift/no-go condition. 2. if the cogs fail (sometimes referred to as "limp-home mode") the engine will not be able to turn the driveshaft, and the car will not move under its own power.

Good Luck... let's hope it's the tranny mount(s).
