Thanks for the feedback there. Obviously even more food for thought! Given the car is garaged in the winter and will only come out on warmer days I'll stick with 20w50 but will probably look into this comma oil as a budget alternative, maybe if I need top ups.

I would stick with the brand that made factory race/street oils ranging for Porsche for decades. We all know which one that is.

when the temps drop below 55F, all those oils turn into STP GARBAGE.
That's the big flaw with the 944.
Don't run 20w50 once <55F fall mornings commence.
15w50 is bad enough.
Change to 5w, and later on, even to 0w once the cold fall mornings make their appearance.
and less hard street driving after changing to 0w40 or 5w40 for the hard cold, mean, nasty winter.

Cold startup presents a huge problem in North America 1/2 the year.
5w50 & 0w40 saves your engine from cold startup damage.
The thicker grades do not flow enough at startup. M1 20w50 V-Twin
Viscosity @ 100° C: 20.8

Viscosity @ 40° C: 172 (that's quite bad: let's see it at 21°F?)

Zinc 1,750

Phosphorus 1,600

M1 15w50 Viscosity @ 100° C: 18

Viscosity @ 40° C: 125

Viscosity Index, ASTM D2270 160
Zinc 1,300
Phosphorus 1,200

M1 5w50 (Porsche super approved)Viscosity @ 100° C: 17.5

Viscosity @ 40° C: 108
Zinc 1,100
Phosphorus 1,000

M1 0w40 (Euro formula) Viscosity @ 100° C: 12.9

Viscosity @ 40° C: 71
Zinc 1,100
Phosphorus 1,000

Wait, when did my 928S and 944S become "classics"???? My dad's 68 911L is a classic.

32+ years ownership, well over >240k miles on my engine, bearings were swapped at 30k miles when the oil cooler let water into oil (porsche warranty repair), zero problems with the bottom end since that. 10W40 penzoil, driven winter, summer, autocross. Never had an issue.

Currently also run 10/40 in my 928S. This bugs a lot of people in the community, but 10/40 is rated up to 100 degrees or so, when it is hotter outside I simply don't drive the thing. Worth it for me as I do drive it in 10-30 degree temps (with chains as needed) far more often than hot temps. So there is that. If I were to track it in the summer I'd go to 20/50 but I wouldn't want that in the car in the winter.

If anybody is using this stuff I would love to buy an empty can (or 3) just for garage art.

The problem with this list is it doesn't apply to All Porsche models, for example My early 944 needs a much different grade of oil than say a 2020 model.

I can only guess what "branded" oil would cost. OK, spendy but not as bad as I thought it might be but missing approvals for 944 models
