Default How can I tell if i have Power Steering issues

My steering (early 944) feels heavy. I am unsure as to what it is supposed to feel like when it is working properly, but it feels like it is taking a lot of effort. What things can I check to see if it is working properly?

Also, my stock steering wheel (albeit not the one that originally came on the car) does not appear to be centered on e steering column. Essentially when I turn the wheel it does not spin from the center, it rotates off axis. Is this normal or do i possibly have a mis-match replacement steering wheel?

Should not feel heavy. When is the last time it has been flushed? I would give it a proper flush and inspect the fluid. Also look up at the rack and make sure your coolant overflow tube hasn't been dripping coolant and caking fluid all over it. Had that happen to one of mine and it got heavy as hell till I got it cleaned off and regreased.

I would start with a flush and inspect. Regarding the steering wheel someone could have mismatched the splines off a bit and it could be on a tad crooked hence not being centered.

You could try removing the power steering belt and see if the steering effort gets a lot worse or stays the same. Are you sure you don't have a manual rack in there? It is a popular swap and the 83 MY had manual steering.

disconnect the lines to the cooler and use compressed air to blow these out. They get clogged up with junk in there and make steering alot harder.
