Have you checked to make sure it's not the regulator?

definitely get the regulator checked out (its bolted onto the alternator) cause that is easy to replace and a whole lot cheaper than the whole alternator. Mine went out and it was just the regulator, like $25 I think

My Volvo (w/Bosch alt.) quit in the middle of Utah one time. Very competent wrench in Green River had to make a 2-hour drive to get $6 of brushes!

Remove regulator (2 slotted screws, I think)
Check brush length (10mm new, 5mm wear limit, IIRC)

I think new brushes come with braided copper pigtails and need to be soldered in, but I haven't BTDT.

Sorry so vague, but HTH.

The innards of my alternator were shot, and the car has 70k on it.

My wrench is very competent, and he told me to just get a new one. Some stuff inside was worn beyond repair.

Sometimes its cheaper when you just spend the money first time around.

What are the symptoms? I agree, most times it is just the regulator - very inexpensive and easy to replace.

Good Luck!

Three things in an alternator that need repair/replacing:

Regulator

Bearings

Resurfacing the commutator for the regulator brushes.

Only IF the alternator does NOT generate at least 15 volts when shorted past the regulator do you EVER need to replace it.

Your "wrench" is just covering his behind by insisting on a rebuilt. I would do the same if I was wrenching on someone elses car in a commercial establishment.

But if it was my car I would enjoy a Saturday afternoon with the beast and rebuild it myself.

I'm in the same boat. Cheapest place I have found for a rebuilt alternator is:
<a href="http://autoexpress.safeshopper.com" target="_blank">http://autoexpress.safeshopper.com</a>
rebuilt Bosch for porsche for $115-$135.

I can only inform you of what I would expect and respond to based upon my 38 years of working on cars both for dealers and myself.

If I worked out of my garage I might offer to replace the regulator or I would insist on a rebuilt if I found the bearings and commutator to be bad.

As to replacing the regulator: Most are set conservatively low. You can get an adjustable for the same cost as a fixed one. 14.1 VDC is a good charging voltage for the 944's.

My 83 944 had about 125,000 miles on it when I noticed something sounded funny in the engine compartment. I used a paper towel tube as a stethoscope and traced the noise to my alternator. I removed the alternator myself and took it to a local alternator repair shop, where they rebuilt it and made it look like new. Cost: $140. Installation and removal was a real pain in the a$$ due to having to remove and work around the AC compressor.
