Post 325i vs. 944

Okay... I challenged my friend, who has a late 90s 325i. If we race a straight half mile, who will win? The stock 85.5 944 n/a, or the stock late 90s BMW 325i?

The 6-cylinder BMW. Duh.

Get into the twisties and things could be different.

My former cow-orker's '87 325iC was a pretty close match to my 944 in a straight line.

Why do you say "duh?" With that logic, a 6-cyl BMW 325i could beat a 4-cyl 968? I'd say it would be a close run. You'd probably never leave each other's bumper, whoever pulled ahead. My best friend had a 325i and I didn't think it was all that fast, compared to my 924S.

The e36 has 189hp and clocks in a 15.3 1/4.

The 944 has 143hp and clocks in a 15.9 1/4.

I didn't mean to imply that the cylinder count had everything to do with the acceleration.

Yes, bout in the half mile? I think the P-Car might have the gearing advantage. The BMW's Ive driven are sloooooow and heavy.

It'll just get worse in the 1/2 mile. At higher speeds hp & aerodynamics are more important than the extra flab the BMW carries. My guess is (without checking the numbers) that the 15 year younger BMW will have a better CD.

Guys,

A 944 2.5 in UK spec has 163BHP with a 60 time of around 7.9 secs

I'd say my 211BHP S2 944 would blow away any modern day BMW 325 never mind a 1987 model.

True Mike, but the argument was between an 85.5 944, not an S2.

Btw, numbers I've pulled on my 85.5 944 is 15.7 1/4 and 7.5s 0-60's.

Also, I'm not sure if the fact that the BMW might be a stick or auto would make a difference.
