I've been looking into it, as a source for parts (different ring and pinion gear ratios). I think the biggest issue would potentially be the shifter arrangement. It seems like you might be able to get it to work by mixing and matching parts from the 016 box with things like the 944 bellhousings, castings, etc.

Different gear ratios is ok for me, I just need to fix my car, cause I don't have money to buy new tranny , I just need to replace a ring and the pinion.

He says, “The transaxle installed in the Audi 5000 and the Porsche 944 is mechanically identical with the exception of reverse gear synchronizer added to the 5000 models. The Porsche 944 models have a drive shaft tube, attached to the transaxle bell housing, which extends forward to the clutch housing at the rear of the engine. On the Audi this transmission is located at the front of the car attached to the engine, in the Porsche it located at the rear with the engine in the front, connected by a drive shaft.”

I didn’t see him mention the obvious difference - that the Audi’s bell housing has a place for a starter motor…no big deal.

But I like to get more opinions myself.

Thanks, that's a great help... I've been trying to find all the info on all the gearsets, etc, available, but the VW/Audi guys give me the cold shoulder... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="frown.gif" />

I had the EXACT same problem last summer. The ring and pinion itself isnt very expensive, but the labor would be as much as putting in a new tranny. i would advise finding a good used transmission for around $600. thats what i was forced to do.......lack of cash

Did you try Audiworld or Audifans.com (actually sign up for the quattro list.) I'm not familiar myself with the 016 tranny other than that it's from the quattro version of the 4000 and I think 80/90 series cars. From the pics I've seen they look identical, but I'm not sure about the linkage. I know that some of the quattros have different rear diff ratios and I think that must affect the final drive ratio in the 016 tranny too. Best to do some searches or ask questions on those sites.

yeah...but the 016 Audi 5 speed was very popular in Europe so he may have a lot more options now.

in the States most Audis came with automatics...yeah, that too is very close to being the same automatic transmission as the 944 used

Looks like the gear sets in a 944 are a bit of a mix and match between the Audi 4000 and Audi 5000.

were there some diffs that had a press-fit vs. spline-fit gear? did some of the 924 series have press-fit? the 944 has spline-fit..true?

what does the 4000 & 5000 audi diffs have...he needs at least the ring & pinion...but then if the price is right maybe the whole transaxle will work?

I have ordered porsche bearings. Mechanic is making big eyes when I told him to make it from audi gearbox ) Heh... hope everything will be ok.

Oh, please, Michael, cut the purist crap and try to picture what it'd be like trying to keep a P-car running in Latvia!! Especially absurd considering the boxes are simply variations on a theme, it's really no more heretical than taking the front suspension off of a Golf to replace a curbed corner. I mean, since they're the same parts and all. Perhaps you'd feel more comfortable buying your car covers at the dealer?

vlens, best of luck with your repair. I hope someday I'll find that magic 4.75 Audi box out there to bolt my magic 951 LSD into and go smoke me some 944's...
