Default Burnt ignition rotor? Pics....

Was driving into work in the black 87 951 on Friday doing about 40mph when the car backfired and shut off. I drifted into a safe spot and tried a couple more times to start it - just got more backfires and a heavy fuel smell. I came back after work with a trailer and hauled it home and found the rotor all burnt up. Put on another cap and rotor and she has been running fine ever since. Do you all think this is just from old age or a manufacturing flaw or something more serious? Not sure how old it is.

Looks like maybe it was arcing in there, for some reason? Maybe it just wore down and started arcing, but how are your plug wires and grounds -- maybe the spark was finding a path or least resistance? Watch the new one for similar signs if nothing else...

This happened on my 84. Was coming around a corner and the car just kinda started stumbling and died.

Opened the hood and the cap and been blown completely off! The rotor had shattered, leaving only a stub on the shaft.

I think age just gets to them.

Ok - the truth is that is not a rotor - it is my flux capacitor

Josh,
Glad to hear it was just the rotor and you put your new trailer to good use! I'm curious how you got the car on the trailer if it wouldn't run?

The trailer was nice! My dad unhooked from it and we just put chalk blocks by the wheels. Then we tied off from the front of the car to his V10 TDI Touareg and he pulled me right up

Yep, except mine melted all the way through, the end of the rotor was literally hanging on by a thread (why is there thread in there?)

FWIW, my rotor was less than a year old and "Made In Italy" ...

First time I have seen that on a Bosch rotor. Very common on aftermarket (non-Bosch) rotors.

I know this isnt my thread, and I apologize for it, but on my rotor, the plastic underneath the outside metal edge has been worn away, and the metal is slightly bent. It may sound stupid, but could this be the cause of the recent violent stumbling under boost I started having? This stumbling started after I made a left hand turn from a stop sign.

I wouldn't rule it out. Years ago I had an NA, and it developed a misfire under load. The tip of my rotor was gone. It wasn't even in there! It had either burned, or been pulverized into dust.
