I'm still trying to find the best possible solution for a 944 with a ls1 pulling 500 hp. I've heard that a A8 transmission will work is that true? What fabrication is needed? What are the gains or losses?

Factory five is having a G-50 tranny designed for the LSx:

No idea how hard it would be to use in a 944.

I've heard the 951 isn't as strong as the 968 but the 968 gearing is too close. I'm just wondering if there's another solution rather than choosing the lesser of two evils. I've just heard that the A8 might be the solution to that problem.

This would be the European FWD A8 manual transmission and not the gigantic and expensive 5 speed automatic AWD trans I assume? I do not see the point, a 951 trans is likely easier, cheaper (once installed) and better suited.
The FWD A8 only had a 2.8L V6 so it might use the same trans (or at least similar) as the FWD Audi 100 and 90 series for all I know. I would not expect that trans to handle tons of torque and it is going to be a one-legger.
There is a guy who converted a six speed transaxle to fit in his mid engined Lotus project behind the Audi V8. I do not think it'd fit in the 944 without at least cutting out the rear floorpan and switching to a fuel cell. Super cool project though:

If I can find a "DUK" 012, I will mod that one up 3.55 (R&P)
I also Stumbled into info that 01-05 Audi A4 and A6 "FEC" and "GBQ" have 3.44 R&P's and the pinion shafts are larger than 951 tranny's, the input shafts are shorter than the 944 boxes by an inch and can easily be fixed by sleeving the 944 coupler.....still researching

If hte bellhousing at the back end of the torque tube matches the Audis then I'm sure you could use any of the 5-6 speed manuals from the Audis. Just have to convert them to 2wd by removing the transfer box unit.

The 4wd boxes are weak as the output shafts are HOLLOW.
Also the 2.8l boxes would be my next choice as they are everywhere in the States and have a 3.7 R&P, good but not as good as the TDI FWD boxes. There is a box on Ebay that is 6-speed that would be a good choice if you wanted a 6speed in the V8 944. It is an Audi 01X code "FYA".
I'm still trying to find the Ring gear size on these boxes and compare to the 951 tranny ring gear

The 951 transmission from the "turbo S" models not only have LSD, but hardened gears as well. They are the best bet. A little hard to find, but way cheaper and easier than a weird transmission project.

There is no "bolt in" transmission that will hold that much power, if the 951 transmission won't. You're going to have to cut, weld, and fabricate.
And that being the case, you might as well get a Vette torque tube and transaxle (t-56 based).

Hey Porch take a look at the ring teeth profile of this 012 box......
It looks deeper than the 951 boxes, but this is from a Boxster and there are better ratios for this box 3.71 3.55 and 3.44 (V8 friendly)
http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarti...-TRANS-LSD.htm
Can someone confirm the 951 Pinion front bearing I.D x O.D.?

The R&P is really only a problem on the n/a boxes, though!
Eh, i just don't care about the transaxle "problem" anyways. The transaxle on this car is a great reason NOT to build a 500hp motor if you ask me (and if that's not enough, then snapping axles and torque tube shafts should be!).
