Post Rear ride height question

I'm looking for some quick feedback on this subject.

I'm taking the car in for an alignment tomorrow a.m. and thought I'd have the shop lower the rear ride height to be level with the front first, as per commonly recommended here and elsewhere.

To prepare for this, I just measured the lowest body points immediately behind the front wheel, and in front of the rear wheel (excluding the black plastic side skirt things), and found the rear was indeed about 1" higher.

However, I put a level on the door sill and found that the sill sits perfectly level. I also measured the highest point of the front and rear wheelwell openings, and found they are within 1/16" (front is 25-5/16" and rear is 25-3/8").

Based on the sill and wheel openings it appears the car already sits level, but I'd like to know how your cars compare.

Is your door sill level? Are the wheel opening heights similar (relative to each other, front and rear)? Have you lowered the rear ride height, and if so what did you use as your reference point for level?

Man I say jack that thing up in the back and make it look like a street thumping trans-am!! J/K!!!! Anyway, I think lowering it in the rear would look better. Good luck!

lowering the rear too much will soften up the suspension

Anyone with measurement comparisons or a level check on their stock or lowered car? Does your door sill sit level?

If the rocker is an inch higher in the rear than it is in the front but is still level, I have to wonder how level the surface you were parked on is!

It sounds to me like your car's rear ride height has already been lowered.

Dave, good point. I'll have to check the level of the floor it's parked on. Are the wheelwell openings a valid measure? They measure essentially the same front to rear.

I floated a similar post to this on the 944 turbo board which was met with even less enthusiasm. My car sits at 24 3/4 to the top of the wheel well in the front and 25 1/4 in the rear. Both left and right sides are withing an 1/8". I suspect my springs are sagging after 16 years and I too am about to go in for an aligment.

I have gone through the archive and found a reference to the wheel wells measuring 26 to 26 1/2 for a stock car and 25 to 25 1/2 for a lowered car. I don't think my car has been lowered and I know my front springs are stock having just removed them to do Koni inserts. I was wondering if Weltmeister lowering springs might actually raise the front even with the rear.

My early car measures 25 1/4" front and 26 3/8" rear at wheel wells, this with original front springs (probably sagging after 19 years) and unadjusted rear. Since yours measures an inch lower in the rear, it makes me think your ride height has already been adjusted. You could probably tell by simply looking at the angle of the rear trailing arm or the position of the eccentric bolt.

To resurrect a post, I took some measurements today. My car had been lowered front and rear by the PO. I levelled the front to the rear so that the car is level side to side and the door sills and rocker panels are level. The front is about 1/2" (10 mm, actually) below Euro M030 ride height spec. Spec is for caster block bolt head to be 130 mm +/- 10 mm below the center of the rims, mine is at 140 mm. My front suspension arms slope upwards slightly; they are level at the Euro ride height spec. I haven't compared my rear to the Euro ride height spec, but it is about 1 1/4" below the US spec of 522 mm (20 1/2") +/- 20 mm to the top of the rear bumper.

My front fender arches are 26" from the road, level left/right. My rear fender arches are 25 1/4", level left/right. My fender arches are definitely not level when the car is level.

I thought the car would be slower now that it is not driving down hill all the time, but that hasn't proven to be the case yet. <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" />

RJP, I just all the heights checked and a 4-wheel alignment done on my 951.

The rear ride height can be adjusted by the eccentric on each trailing arm. You can check the procedure at Tom Boerger's site "944 S2 central."
