Question 944S replacement exhaust

Recently the tailpipe rusted off from the muffler on my 944S. I am intersted in buying bolt on cat back replacement for my car, but have been having trouble. I see many companies make them for the 944, but not for the 944S.

Does anyone know of a bolt on replacement for the 944S?? I want something that has close to stock look and sound probably and dont want to spend too much.

Thanks

speed force racing makes a great exhaust system for all types of 944's. Do a search on the forum and youll find BlueS2's audio clip of how awesome they sound.

Any competent muffler shop should be able to fab a cat back system for you for cheap $$$$.

About how much would it cost to get a stainless cat-back fabricated?

I looked at the speed force racing stainless cat back and that was $599. Which was pretty pricey.

As for the competent muffler shop, I guess I havent found one yet, because all these places seem to want to do is bolt on a replacement if they could find one. Well one might be, but their welder is broken, just my luck...

If I can find a shop that could fabricate one for cheap, does anyone know what kind of muffler i should look for to preserve somewhat stock sound and performance??

Thanks...

sRD944S:

Exhaust for the 944 is the same as for the 944S... You could even fit a turbo/S2 muffler on there but it would require some drilling (like mine) 944 has a 3 bolt pattern and the T/S2 has a 4 bolt pattern...

If it's just the tip that's rusted just get a new one welded in place. I bought a used muffler and it's loud... very loud. When I have passagers I wish I had a stock muffler!!! But when driving alone it's fine as is.

I am thinking now of trying to find a shop that would be able to weld an aftermarket muffler onto my car.

Who makes a resonably priced, good muffler for replacement? Also what size inlet/outlet should i be looking for? What is the inlet on the stock muffler?

Thanks

IIRC the exhaust is 2.25" from the "y" at the end of the header all the way back. Lets hope it is because that's what I'm using to fab a "cat test pipe".

I was looking at summit racing at some borla mufflers, and found only 2.5" or 3" inlet/outlet mufflers.

Would a 2.5" or 3" be able to be welded on?

Hey SRD, I would look for a used exhaust on Ebay. Any 944NA exhaust will do. Or look into getting a Bursch system from AutoAtlanta. (www.autoatlanta.com)

Try to avoid welding if you can. Just my opinion, but take it from one who just did a huge makeover of the exhaust on a "S". Get something that bolts up to the exhaust pipe.

My rear pipe rusted off the muffler a while back as well. The tip just dropped at an angle, and the car sounded ricey all of a sudden. I took it to a muffler shop, they just cut a new pipe and angled it like the old one. Then cut off and re-attached my exhaust tip.
Took them about 30 mins to complete, and they even ground off where the rust was on the end of the muffler and sprayed the spot when they finished.
Cost ~50 dollars.
This may be a cheaper solution for you.
Also, if you plan on replacing the exhaust. I recommend buying new exhaust mounting bolts, it makes things easier using non-rusted parts.

Thanks for the advice. I have tried two local shops, one of them says they dont weld mufflers back together and tried to look for a replacement muffler in their NAPA database (good luck). The other said they would do it, but their welder is broken and they dont know how soon they will be getting a new one.

Also, it was my understanding that cat back exhaust from a 944 will not fit on the 944S. Several sources have told me this. Is this true?

I'm off in search of more shops now...

Porsh-uh, why are you so strongly against welding?

Just wondering, since I've seen quite a few posts suggesting the custom weld route, usually because of how cheap it is compared to full cat-backs.

I'm thinking of doin that on my S too, but would like to know of any drawbacks.
