Front speaker recommendations
What speakers would you recommend for my '87 951? The head unit and speakers (all) were AWOL from my recently purchased vehicle. I have plans for the rear speakers, but what head unit and front speakers will fit without major modifications? I'm not looking for audio competition type stuff, just quality speakers for when my girlfriend is nagging me. (j/k!)

There are many opinions on this, and you can search the archives. After doing so, I bought the updated speaker mounts listed in the 944 FAQ by Walter Spector(an '87 may already have them) and JBL GTO 6425 speakers. No mods, original parts, and a perfect fit with decent sound. Pricey, but it works.

I got 4x6" infinity kappa plates to fit without major modification. I did have to use the dremel to kinda square off the hole, but it was only about 1/4" of metal that needed to be cut off in one spot (you could even modify the speaker if you felt more comfortable with that, it's just part of the frame is too thick). You could easily reinstall the original speakers without any work at all as all the holes are in the same spot. Once done they look & sound great, with the only problem being that the factory covers stick out about 1/4", but it looks fine. It was still tight enough I could use the factory screws. Let me know if you want any pictures.

I'm thinking of making some kind of rubber gasket to fill that gap. It should be pretty easy to fit it, but I don't konw how to make it.

The problem you will find with front speaker replacement is either a magnet that is too deep that will hit your window channel, or a tweeter that protrudes too far and interferes with the stock speaker cover. I looked at many speakers and finally purchased a pair of Alpine 4x6 2 way speakers (SPS4629) for $90. The trick to installation of the speakers is the use of a plastic spacer that comes with the speakers. What you do is this:
1. Remove the four screws on the stock grille and remove the grille and stock speaker.
2. Loosen the door panel on the leading edge (the part that is covered by the side of the dash).
3. Put the speaker in place in the hole and plug it up to the wiring. Make sure the speaker is behind the door panel.
4. Slip the plastic spacer behind the door panel where you loosened it on the leading edge.
5. Slide the spacer into place between the speaker and the door panel. The spacer will lay on top of the speaker and behind the door panel. This spacer pushes out on the door panel imperceptibly (trust me, you cannot tell that the spacer is there - there is no bulge) and gives enough clearance that the stock grille will then cover the tweeter without a gap around the edges (see Scootin159's picture above).
6. Screw the grille in back in place.
7. Reattach front of door panel.
Takes about ten minutes per door and sounds great!

So I have sound, but it's attrocious.
I don't even turn the stereo on anymore.

Hope this helps.

If you don't want to spend a ton of cash on speakiers, go to Parts Express (http://www.partsexpress.com) and search for Legacy under the "Search by brand name".
Next, use the drop downs to select the sub category "Automotive Speakers 4"x6".
