Default Spark plugs and heat ranges

My car is an 1984 (early) and stock ignition. I've been running a Bosch R6 but I looked it up and apparently it calls for a R8, which is a "hotter" plug.

Anyone on the board with actual experience regarding using different spark plug heat ranges and seeing a difference, performance wise ?

This is my track car, so it basically gets flogged on when in use. I'm just wondering if I went from the 6(colder) to the 8(hotter) if there would be any anticipated change in fuel burn or performance?

My '84 has some type of 3 prong plug in it now. I ordered the correct plugs (r8) and car would barely run. Not sure why this is, but for me trying the correct plug was a $30 or so mistake.
