What's that whirring noise?
Well, I've got the motor together after installing the SDS and consequently repalcing the timing belts. I've got the spring tensioner for the cam belt and followed the procedure posted on the 944 Garage site. I don't have the tensioning guage. The balance shaft belt is the wider version. The one I removed was the narrower one. There seems to be an inordinate amount of whirring noise/noises related to the belts or rollers or pulleys. I've talked to one person who had his belts replaced at the dealer last year and said that his were loud as well for a few hundred miles. Is this the normal case or is my belt tension way to high?

Crazy as it may sound, accorcing to an audio engineer I once worked with said that a toothed belt can make noise akin to a spinning fan. Now take a belt with teeth on both sides.....
It's a possibility....

My timing belts were replaced about 4 months ago, and were never noisy at all, before or after replacing them.
I would look further into it if it's noisy, unfortunately I can't help as to why it's noisy.

A whine is usually a sign of high tension, and a slapping noise a sign of too low (more noticeable with a cold engine). If you just replaced the belt, then this is probably normal. The grooves in the sprockets are worn down from the old belt(s). The new belt is very angular, and slaps into the old slots. These slaps at high speed turn into a whine. In time, the corners will round on the belt, the rubber soften, cord stretch, it will mate better, and quiet down.
Don't forget to retension it in a couple thousand miles!

I'll chime in too...
Just had timing and balance belts, rollers, water pump replaced and mine too is whirring away. Seems like it's a normal thing to begin with based on the posts here. I'm glad someone asked though - I just tend to blow these things off and don't react to new squeeks, rattles, hums etc. I'd go crazy if I had to find them all. That's probably bad advice all the same.

I don't own the magic tool - but I did re-tension my timing belt TWICE following the standard book procedure of setting to TDC, backing off 10 degrees, and then letting the spring tensioner loose, then re-tighten the tensioner bolt. The belt whine is "pronounced" and when cold, it scares little children and mystifies the rice-burner owners.
I've checked the leading and trailing faces of the belts 1000 miles since the last retension, and everything looks good and nothing is interfering - so I'm suspecting the whine is fine. (i'ze a poet and didn't kno it!)

I just had my timing belt (along with all of the other belts, rollers, pulleys, etc) done 1500 miles ago and it's going in for retension next week. When it's cold, it sounds like I have a monster supercharger or something like that under the hood. The Porsche Doctor that works on her says that that is very normal, and will quiet down by the 5k mark or so........

whining is usually indicative of higher levels of tension. My belts are new and quiet. I dont believe its an issue, just an anoyance. I back the tension off to quiet them up. They need to be retentioned anyway.

The 'whiiiirrrr' of newer belts is very normal, based on my experience. I can always tell the new belts at the track 'cause they are a tad louder. No worries, mate. You're ride is fine. Keep an eye on the tension, and it should e fine.
I agree with Michael, the whiiir is a good sound! <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />
