Default A good day-smog testing

It looks like the 944S is finally sold and order is restored in the Universe. It had failed smog so miserably about 2 weeks ago and the previous buyer backed out due to the high smog numbers. The emissions were absolutely off the chart, over by a factor of 2-9 times in 5 of 6 categories. I had a new CARB certified 944 specific cat installed yesterday; the generic cat was only 3 years old, 20K miles, and was toast. Today it passed so clean at a 'test only' shop I am totally amazed. Emissions dropped lower than any 944 I have ever seen test and I've had several. This is even after California reduced all max allowed levels on 1980's vehicles by 33% this past April. Hard to believe a car with 180K on it can run so clean without any 'tricks' to make it pass.

I posted this because the older generic cats they used to sell here 2 years ago are totally worthless in no time and several people have problems passing smog here. I didn't even have to replace the O2 sensor, air filter, plugs, or anything else!

i have a 1994 968. there's no more smog tests whatsoevaa in massatusetts -- now that it's past its 15th b-day.

it's pissaaaa.

http://www.vehicletest.state.ma.us/m...basicinfo.html

What vehicles need to be inspected:

All vehicles that are registered in Massachusetts must receive a safety inspection each year. Vehicles listed below must also receive an on-board diagnostic (OBD) emissions test each year:

•Model year 1996 and newer passenger cars, trucks and SUVs, as well as 2008 and newer medium-duty vehicles.....

The following types of motor vehicles are exempt from the emissions inspection:

•Cars, trucks and SUVs manufactured before model year 1996 no longer receive tailpipe emissions tests...........

did i ever tell you about my 29 pound exhaust system ?

I had a local shop I use all the time in Elk Grove install it "Specialized Exhaust and Custom Fabrication". It's a MagnaFlo #36104. The cat was $179 and $50 for installation.

Sometimes I just hate living in California... Everything after 1975 has to get tested.

I'll trade you Elk Groves? IIRC our Cali smog tests go back as far as 1974 and later. I think the whole idea is to force people into newer cars but they forget that nearly 25% of the population here lives below poverty level and can't afford anything but absolute beaters. The only benefit the Cash for Clunkers Program did here was to get rid of hundreds of Obama/Biden bumper stickers.

According to my boss, aftermarket cats are only good for passing one smog test, and they will be kaput in less than 2 years. If I still have my audi in 1.5 years, I'll let you know if it passes or not; I doubt it!

Biden, now there's a name I haven't heard in a few months.

The term 'aftermarket' is a slippery slope since all cats for our cars are aftermarket now. The older not CARB cert cats are the bad ones. If you compare the reactive surface area on the newer required cats now it's like 5 times more than just 2 years ago. I have no problem thinking they will make it 5+ years...not as good as the original model but still much better than when the cat market was unregulated.

I noticed a lot fewer of those stickers. LOL

Having just gone through this nightmare...congrats. It's getting more and more ridiculous here in Cali.

Click on the icon on the bottom right of a person's post, the one that looks like " "
Or type [quotte] blah blah blah [/quotte] except spell the word quote correctly

Man, California is so beautiful and pleasant, it is well worth the annoyance of smog-check hassles to live here. Besides, if you're really pinched there are ways to avoid tests.

It's a mixed blessing to be free of regulation. Absolutely nothing is required where I live in NM, but in Albuquerque (a mile away) a smog test is required every 2 yrs. Rio Rancho is now home to every car that won't pass in ABQ, and with absolutely no inspections people drive cars that have been in crashes, that have one or no headlights, no brake lights, windshields that are not just cracked but that someone went thru in a crash (still blood on it!). Doesn't give you a lot of good feeling going down the freeway at 70 next to someone whose front wheel has 20 deg negative camber, bald tires, brakes shooting sparks...
