Hi all,

New to the forum and my 87 944T. Got a problem. It has been running great for the last year. Has 44K and is like new.
The problem started as a fuel pump problem I thought. It would crank over start and then just shut down as though out of fuel. Towed it home and let it sit overnight. The next morning it started and sat there idling
Can you folks let me know what all could be making this happen(from the fuel pump forward). I'm OK at R&R. Not a diagnostician. Figure I should replace as many parts as possible instead of paying for a mechanic's bill(if this is a reasonable assumption).

Thanks a lot.

Probably the DME relay. It controls the fuel pump and computer, they are known for going bad.

Welcome

Might be the DME relay going bad. You should always carry one as a spare since they are a known problem.

EDIT: Damnit Travis, you snuck your response in while I was typing!

excellent

start/run problems = probably DME relay. it might be junk, but sometimes the contacts bend over time due to repetitive temperature change. i advise inspecting this possibility for a more efficient fix.

Hi, I had huge fuel problems on mine.
But I had to change a lot of parts before finding the problem.

I've change:
-TPS
-fuel pump
-fuel pressure regulator
-coil
-spark plugs
-fuel filter
-Idle stabilizer

and finaly, my problem was the AFM

NOW, running like charm

Hi, Check out Clark's garage.com shop manual. It goes from "A - Z" and look under "D" for DME Relay. Might be a good idea to read all of it when you have time to refresh your memory. I go over it all the time as I am starting to have a bad case of CRS.

Cheers,
