So, now you're thinking "Which piece of crap is he speaking of in particular?" I speak of the trunk and the way that it latches. I totally hate it. If I were a ninja then I would...
So, my car leaks on the left side of the trunk like a lot of peoples do. I did the whole hose thing and determined that mine is leaking right over the top of the seal. I thought that I would try to tighten the little fastener a half turn or so to see what would happen.
**++READ THIS++** This caused a huge chain reaction, consisting of my trunk staying closed all weekend and the car being a bit quiter then leading to this morning. It was below freezing this morning, and it rained a bit last night. Hmmm. My trunk latches were frozen. It has happened before, no big deal, just let them thaw out. On my 20min drive to work this morning my trunk popped open like 15 times. I don't know what gives. I can shut it and wrestle with it to make sure that it is closed, I get back in the car and am comfortable and have my seatbelt on and am driving off and poof... it opened again.
HELP ME!!!
BTW- I have had a huge case of the mondays so far. My alarm didn't go off this morning. My uniform was not ironed(big pain) and I had no time to eat breakfast or make lunch. When I got to work, my boss, uh yeah, he isn't even going to be in until noon. Oh Monday. <img src="graemlins/cussing.gif" border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" />

this weekend i finally found the cause of my trunk leak....its right behind the drivers seat. i inpected my hatch seal and it looks good, the water is coming in where the glass has separated from the frame of the trunk lid. its only 3 inches long and maybe an 1/8" separation. i'm gonna put a lil' silicon in there then take it to the car wash and see if that fixes it. anyone else ever see this problem???

And if a REAL ninja's trunk had open 15 times he'd be Soooo pissed, he cut up his car, and every car in the parking lot at work, his desk, the entire building and half a city block, plus anyone that got in his way... then he'd feel Sooo bad he'f commit sepuku!

I once saw a Ninja bitch-slap a whole town when his hatch wouldn't stay closed!
But seriously, I bet when you adjusted the hatch anchors, you made them too short, causing them to miss the locking latch in the body...know what I mean?
Unless I slam my right side hatch, it doesnt close, and I get an annoying rattle until I figure it out!

You may want to inspect the portion of the latch mechanism that is in the tail of the car, and not the hatch itself. There are two nuts holding that unit in place, and over time, the nuts can get loose, and cause the conditions you desribe.
Now, for the loose nuts on the road, there's nothing that can be done, except to hire a Ninja...

The half turn may have caused the pin to become too short to engage. I did this once myself and had the same 'trunk pops open when it's not supposed to' problem.
Undo the half turn and try a little less and it should work.

You have to adjust the hatch with very small movements to the pin. I went through this for a long time, and it just takes really small adjustments to make a big difference. I finally got my hatch to shut up and remain closed. Also, ensure the mechanism is well lubricated and moving freely.

Sauerkraut,
I just went thru this with my rear hatch separating from the frame too. I put silicone sealant in the seam on top and underneath where it mounts to the frame. It's the top corner on the drivers side. I blasted it with a hose this weekend and it stayed dry. I pulled off the old sealant where the PO did the same thing. But the carpet on the rear wheel well hump on the drivers side is still getting a little wet. Anyone have this happen to them and know of a fix?

Yeah, so I beat this old lady on the street to make up for it, then I cut up her dog! (No i did't)
Anyway... I got so pissed and took it back down half a turn and it is still all jacked up. I'm gonna carry the 13mm around for a while until it is adjusted correctly.
Thanks guys. (and ninjas)

I have the same problem with my 87. I have replaced the rear hatch seal, the sunroof seal, checked the drain holes,..etec..etc..
I finnally figured out it is the rear glass separating from the frame as well. I have not put sealant in there yet but I will.
Has anyone had luck removing the rear hatch from the car and pushing the frame back onto the glass glueing iton and then reinstalling the whole hatch again?

My rear hatch would leak right in the middle bottom, making the "hump" (for the spare tire) wet. It was the rubber seal. The seal can separate at this particular point.
The hatch also had the infamous "top corner" leak (some have already spoke of this one). My seal had separated from the glass also.
Crazy Glue fixed both leaks, no problem.
