Default engine knock?

Hi all,

Started the car this morning and I had some knocking noise out of the engine bay. I drove the car gently for about 3 minutes and then stopped and listened to the noise. It sounded like top end knocking. after restarting the engine the knock had gone. I took the other car to work.

Upon return from work started the engine again and there was no knock.

The had a thermo switch replaced the previous day and brake fluid change.

The car is a 1989 944S2

My question: What was the knock and what could have caused it?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Rob

lifter : It rides on the camshaft's lobes and uses oil pressure to apply a slight pre-load to the valve.

lifters sit on the bottom of the cam tower. These are what you were hearing. If the car had been sitting they could have been lacking oil and are usually noisy even when working well.

Judging from your lack of knowledge i would search out a trusted mechanic or do alot of homework. (not trying to be mean just saying)

If it sounds a bit like a diesel from the top end on start up that's probably a lifter. The noise subsides when the engine's warmed up. Can go away quite quickly after startup. What they mean when an engine sounds 'tappety'.

Thanks carlege, 333,

You are correct, the car had been sitting for a while.

By the sound of your comments I needn't be worried or am I looking to replace the lifter/s?

Regards,
Rob
