Default Rattle Noise Found! Maybe this will help others!

I have had a rattle -like sheet metal- that seemed like it must be the exhaust heat shields....

I noticed it the most when accelerating at high load/low rpm; usually 1st or 2nd gear.. All my heat shields were tight and banging around under the car never helped find the culprit.

Well Long Long (like 18 hours last weekend) story short... I was replacing Rod Bearings, Oil Pan Gasket, and Motor Mount, when I discovered this! See part #27, its the flywheel cover.

I noticed this thing rattled when trying to access the rear oil pan bolts. I removed it while I was doing the job and did not put it back on yet.

Today while driving the car, I noticed there is no more rattle like i had before!

p.s. I will be re-installing this piece this weekend as i believe it keeps debris out of your flywheel/clutch; however I will install rubber or something between the metal to metal parts and make sure it is tight...

Hope this helps someone with a unsolvable rattle...

Mine used to rattle like mad and would break all the time. It was caused by my balance shafts that were 180 degrees off and bad motor mounts. After fixing that it never broke or rattled again.

Glad it worked for you

Did this dense rubbing/rattling sound seem like it was coming from around the shifter area? Had the transmission replaced, and this sound is new to me. Is it possible to check with out taking anything apart?

Thee are supposed to be 4 rubber strips on the edges of the shield; one at the curve around the crank, one on each side, and one at the bottom. They are like upholstery edge pieces, I can't think of the proper term, stuff you put on a sharp edge to protect it. That would prevent the rattling.

And yes, the bolts on that are like M12's, I can only guess they are using holes that normally bolt up to the block on some other application.

944ross is exactly right. I had one of the rubber pieces left. They could probably be made by cutting silicon hose lengthwise And sliding them on the edge.
Yes the bolts holding it on are so large, it must be load bearing!! Ha ha joking.
Removal is literally 2 bolts, so you could just remove it if you want to determine if its rattling. ...
