Post Exhaust smells like fuel??

Now that the weather has begun to chill, my car has developed a strange problem. In the morning upon start-up, I get the "normal" small puff of white smoke--I say normal because it has done this for the four years I have owned the car--However, the last two days, I have thought that I also smelled fuel. The first day, I immeadiately shut it down, fearing a leaking fuel line and subsequent inferno, however upon close inspection of all lines, they are bone-dry--no leaks under the car either. This morning, fuel smell was confirmed upon start-up when I walked to the back of the car, and my flannel shirt sleeve conveniently absorbed a nice "unleaded" smell which has been reminding me to post this all day
Is my car suddenly running rich? It is totally stock(86 951) just clicked 103K, and runs/boosts fine, no fuel smell during driving. Any ideas--smoke immeadiately disappears, idle is fine, starts fine, etc...help, my shirt is making me woozy

Hi Eric,

When was the last time you changed the plugs? My guess is that you have one that is getting some build up on it causing an incomplete spark upon start up.

Hope this helps.

Do you need a new O2 sensor? I think a failed O2 sensor causes the engine to run rich. Could also be a failed presure regulator.

It was the Oxygen sensor causing much the same problem as yours with our '84.

Thanks for the replies. Come to think of it, I don't believe the O2 sensor was ever changed. Time to find the old posts regarding the "cheap" universal sensor and install instructions(I know there have been many) and get my hands dirty. Although my new project (79 Wagoneer purchased on Sat.) is taking up all my time, I will post final results when new sensor is installed.

Oh, and Go Steelers <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />
