Default 4x6 speaker that fits front doors (solved!)

I know that a lot of you guys are looking for a speaker that will fit/clear the front doors - and trust me, I know how big of a PITA it can be to find a speaker THAT shallow

I've tried a few different speakers, and I have found only 1 thus far that fits and clears

Alpine SPS-406

Its a perfect fit.

For rears I'll be getting either Image Dynamics 4x6 or JL Audio 4x6

I was thinking that maybe I can make the opening in the car larger to fit a 6x9 in there

I know I have seen quite a few people post that you can modify the rear opening to fit a 6x9, just takes some cutting.

I still need to replace my rear speakers, the task just seems so... bleh.

What about using a 5x7? Not very common, and nothing available in high end equipment, but the ones I have heard were pretty good (Some of Chyrsler's cars had Infinity 5x7's). They offer more bass, and would be easier to fit.

My .02 cents.

I bought some polks on a whim and they do not fit the front door spot. They are too deep. I might try to put the spacers behind the speaker and the grill directly on top of the speaker. Hopefully that works, because I have no front speakers.

if you want to go that far, you should really then consider getting a component set up front and a nice/pair of 8's or 10's ... or a nice single 10" or even a 12" sub back there

944 is a "small" car, it doesn't have a huge interior so it won't take a whole lot to fill the little cockpit compartment with sound

really, I was very happy with just a set of 4x6's in the front and no rear speakers myself, I may even keep it this way.

that and, I'm not sure any more how limited 5x7 selection is, but there are plenty of cheap 6x9's out there

I figured some cutting in the back would work, but I'd probably have to have speakers here before hacking anything up, not sure I want to go that far

I must have missed this - I got these into the front doors of my 1983, so these should fit early cars without issue

I think I've read that later cars have a little more clearance for the magnet, and this clearance issue is only with early cars - hence why its so hard to find a speaker that fits

the speaker's magnet clears the piece for the glass that's right behind the magnet, the speaker itself sits flush, there are only 4 screw holes and they line up perfect with stock 944 speaker screw holes

only small thing that some of you may not like is how the stock grilles fit over it, or maybe not, since my door panels are not in the best shape - I can't REALLY verify this, however, I can verify that the magnet clears and the speaker fits perfect

if you heard my system you might not **** yourself, but then again, you might.... i wanted at least a pair of bigger speakers to go in there too. i was shown that big sound can be done without all the beef that i was looking to install i got lucky with going an inch over stock on the doors and behind the doors...

btw, i love these 2000 watt sonsobitches. bet they can belt out some ****kicken midbass:

and a reward to the first person who can tell me where the hell to mount these (rear quarter already has subwoofer)

I ordered 4 of the 406's for my car. I had to space the front ones out about 1/4 in. because the magnet hit something in the door, not sure what it was, guide, brace? Seem to work ok tho.

Sorry, mine is an '87 951. I probably could have left it like it was, but I just didn't like the idea of metal on metal with a speaker system. It hit on left & right door, so it was not a fluke.
