ya no kidding eh? ... the exhaust cam is at the engine re-builders to see whats the cheaper route, grinding it down, welding it back up, then grinding it back to specs, OR buying a new/used cam.

Then all i'll need is a new chain, and v/c gasket and i can start going back together. Then when im sure it runs again with no issues, i'll do the timing belt and i noticed the cap and rotor look like they're 100 years old so replacing those should help drivability a lot too.

If I may make a suggestion, if you are planning on doing the timing belt anyways, do it now and save yourself a ton of time, especially if it is due or you have no records of when it was done.

+1...it would suck large to go through all this work and have the timing belt snap and bend all the valves.

Plus, we're only talking like $30 here.

i just mean start it up to make sure everything is running properly and ignition timing didnt get messed up and then take it apart and do the belt.... Its away for the winter now so ive got a lot of time.

BTW, $30??? I work in a VW parts dept and my cost is ~$50 for the timing belt and like ~$130 for the balance shaft belt
If you guys can get them dirt cheap in the states and wouldnt mind shipping them up to me, hook me up!!

I've seen TB's for as little as $17, Contitech brand new parts.

You should put your location in your profile...

http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/...9%2C%20Each%20

All the info is there, but it's a Gates in this case. They have Conti as part of a set. My god, the regular 944 2.5 belts are down to $12...

I got my conti TB at Carquest for @ $30 plus tax...I do have a friend who works there though.

The balance belt is more expensive.

Try Paragon, then Pelican too.

AWAY FOR WINTER?!!!

Yikes man, I'm in Owen Sound and get waaaay more snow than you do. mine goes away in November-ish.

Oh, and Travis (Rennbay) sells a super-duper belt made of Kevlar too.

Make sure to specify that it is an S when you get the belt, it is wider than a 8 valve engine timing belt. And if you happen to drive the car 40,000 miles after changing the belt, then make sure to change it again before you get to 40,000 miles. I think the specified change interval is around 40,000 miles and I thought I could get there before changing it. Well I got to 35,000 and learned all about taking the head off a 16 valve engine to replace 12 of the 16 valves that were bent.

well i hope by the time 40,000 miles comes around again, that motor will be coming out for an LS1... i bought the car to use for an LS swap, then thought "maybe i'll keep it all original". After this, i know why that swap is becoming SO popular

Does anyone know which way the ignition rotor is supposed to clocked at when the motor is at TDC? I put mine on the way i thought i remembered but the car didnt fire... figured id just keep rotating until i got it, but broke one of the rotor screws over-tightening....

This is such a pain the ***!!
