Default Car runs fine but no tach? What is the problem?

So after completing my off season prep on the race car (a bit late this year as I had a month vacation and had to pull the motor twice due to an ill fitting replacement clutch disc) I have it done and ready to race.

The engine fires right up, and it idles and drives just fine. All gauges on the dash are working fine (tis an 87 - late cluster) EXCEPT the tach which does not bounce or move at all. I have a Traqmate connected to the coil and it indicates proper RPM readings of around ~950 RPM at idle.

S&R sensors are new and IIRC if they were bad the car would not start or run. Had no issues with the cluster previously but that is about all I can think of. Any other ideas?

Doesn't one of those Molex connectors along the firewall send a signal to the tach? Did you remember to plug those back in after the engine change?

Guess I will find out in the morning when I pick it up from the alignment shop. Maybe I did forget that plug. Thanks for the ideas!

If the gauge panel dies I am ditching stock and going to an AIM dash or something similar. I hate the stock gauges... if I could get something thinner it would make my dash so much easier to deal with. We have to have a dash bar on the roll cage and so the depth of the cluster interferes with the cage bar. I have it on standoffs now to clear the bar. Besides... the stock cluster wiring harness connectors could only have been designed by the devil himself.

It's a pure race car... the dash comes out way more than I like for a plastic ribbon circuit that is 20 years old. Was hoping to use it a little longer though as data logging dash panels are quite expensive, though they do replace the Traqmate at the same time.

I will find out tomorrow morning... racing this weekend and having a tach is helpful!

Confirmed it was the extra molex connector at the DME. We mount ours in the glove box and so maybe just spaced it on the second install. Hooked that up, and tach works fine.

Sweet. She's on the trailer and we are headed to Seattle to do battle against a gaggle of 944's and E30's.

Score one for the home team, glad it was something simple! Now get out there and race!
