I have 2 928's (86.5 ,'81) and 3 944's ('84, '87 auto, '90 s2 cabriolet) As said earlier they are worlds apart and quite the same at the same time. Maintenence for all seems about the same to me.... they will take your money relentlessly! (Same goes for the '73 914, and '70, '73 and '84 corvettes lol) Why not start with something simple and not seen much anymore like a bradley gtll? (Just by coincidence I have one which I am going to sell)

We just sold a 5 speed 944 and have an automatic parts car here. I loved driving it on long commutes that included some stop/go. I miss it.
We have 5 928's and only the really rough, thrashed one was costly. Rest have been averaging $5500 to procure, refrersh and put tires on.

Similar time / money. Similar risk taking needed at time of purchase.

Only buy a 20-30 old performance vehicle if you can invest significant time and money.

Time investment allows you to network for inexpensive parts.

Equaly fun to own and abuse... and used ones are cheap...

It is the most fun you can have for a decent amount of time for relatively little money..

plenty below 5K.. even a GT or two... but they are junk, throw away cars... where as my Porsches are not IMHO throw aways...

I like the 944 family because the high performance models are relatively cheap to buy, you can get tons of cheap parts, and they are a cake walk to work on.. 928s can be just as much fun to drive, but the cost of entry for the best of breed is 4+ times the point of entry.. making it much riskier to buy, own, and have real fun with!

I went to a GTG where a shiney new GT2 parked next to me.. got out, looked my car over, and in talking decided he spent WAY too much for his car because while he HAS the ability to drive it, he is afraid to... the 928s are simmilar, but just lower price point...

in my experience the 928 CAN be MUCH more expensive to own and opperate, I have been relatively lucky with my 944s, as teh largest expenditure to date has been teh profesional motor builder... wich has still cost me less than the pricing on many "ok" 928s to buy...

I have both and they are completely different cars. The 944 is a 951 for me and I use that as a fun car. The 928 is my cruise car, definatley more comfortable and no shifting required. I love them both for what they are and they are both very good to me.

A light and well tuned 944 is always fun to drive. If you get an early 928 it will not be much faster than a 944 in city driving, and you will not get nearly the fuel miliage. I love the power of our 968 but I enjoy driving the 944NA just as much. What ever you do go for a well sorted car that you can work on yourself and either one will be a good choice. Also make sure you look at 968's as well. Too me that is the best of both cars.

928s are a headache, and expensive!

944s are troopers. Our '84, we've owned since 1989, and it has only broken down twice. Cheap too.
