What month were you there? My car is number 47something made in 7/85, and its red could very well be there I guess.
Why do they fold the mirrors forward?

I am glad people are enjoying the photos. The reason I discovered these photos is that I am scanning my slides. Years ago, I took more slides than photographs. Today I discovered some more oldies, but goodies.
In late April, early May of 1982 our local Porsche club put on a concours at the local Porsche dealer in Elkhart, Indiana. This was a small dealer and they had just received their very first 944...red, of course. Even though the car was sold, they displayed it at our concours along with a new 928. We took pictures of it next to a 356, we sat in the car, we peered under the hood, etc.
I had put money down on a spot for a 944. I was about 10th on the list. The third guy on the list decided to give up his spot and I was able to get my first 944. It was Mocha Brown with a tan cloth interior. I replaced the stock wheels with BBS wheels. We got it in late July of 1982 and my wife, our two children (14 & 11) drove to Colorado in it in August for a week. We had a radar detector and the kids looking up through the hatch looking for airplanes. We drove 80-90mph the whole way out and back. One one lonely stretch of two lane in Colorado, we cruised at 110 for about fifty miles.
Our very first Porsche was a 1977 1/2 924 so the kids were experienced riders by this time. This photo was taken along Traverse Bay in northern Michigan. It was a rainy trip which explains the dirty car.

1967 Nurburgring 1000KM Race
While in the Army, I served 26 months in Germany from 1965-67. In May of '67 I and two buddies decided to attend the 1000KM race at the Nurburgring. My buddy had an Opel Kadett which we camped in overnight!! Jim Hall with a Chaparral was on the pole. Unfortunately, during the LeMans start, he could not get the engine lit. By the time he finally was underway, some 30 cars had passed him. Nontheless, by the end of the first lap he was in 6th and by lap six, he was in the lead. All of us GI's and other Americans let out a huge cheer. It was all for naught as some small part broke and he was done. At that time, we knew little about racing and, to us, with Hall out, the race was over.
Memorial Day was the following week. I had time off and went to the local sports car dealership to check out the cars. The owner was trying his best to sell me a Alfa GTV. He spoke English very well and after talking for a bit, I discovered that he had driven a Lotus Elan in the 1000KM race. He said he was on one of the fastest parts of the track when he saw this big white thing closing quickly. The passing rate was so intense that he said his legs started to shake!!

Thanks again.
We also visited the Porsche factory on this trip. While we were unable to take a tour, we did visit the museum and take other photos. Unlike today's new museum, the museum back then was very modest but overwhelming with the content.
Count the cylinders!! Yes, there are 16!!
Check out this 928 wagon!! Sorry it is not of better quality.

I absolutely love seeing old photos (or slides) like this! I have seen a few old pictures of a Porsche dealership somewhere in Germany loaded with older 911's and not a single 928 or 924 in sight, so it must have been in the early 70's... however I have always wanted to see pictures of a bunch of 944's off the factory line. VERY COOL!
