do I have teh correct steering rack?
I have a manual steering rack with part number 944 347 015 00
but manual steering rack for 944 is listed as 944 347 011 00......
and I phoned my parts dealer aqnd he says 944 347 015 00 doesn't come up and it must be a "casting number"
my steering rack is also odd the tie rod ends are femal like on a power steering rack.
the guy I bought it off told me it came out of a 924S
I just want to make sure it fits my car before taking my old rack out.

i'll try and post a picture later when i get one.
i'm thinking they made 2 types of manual racks for the 944. because my rack had different tie rod ends than what I repalced them with.
on the regular manual rack the tie rod ends are male.
but my manual rack had tie rod ends that whee female like on a powersteering rack but the rack is manual and has a 944 number.
also my new inner and outer tie rods bolted onto this rack so it must be the correct rack I'm thinking. the inner tie rods were female on the old and the new part I replaced it with just the outer tie rods were different.
the guy I got it from told me it came out of a 87 924S so it should fit but I want to make sure I have the correct rack.
its just odd that the part number stamped on the rack doesn't come up.

There are lots of casting numbers on Porsche parts that don't show up in PET. As noted above, the number your parts guy can't find is probably a casting number for the rack housing, not the actual part number for the complete assembled rack, which is the other number and the one that shows up in PET.
If you actually bothered to look in PET, you would see there is one number for manual racks designed to bolt onto the alu cross members for the 944/924S: 944.347.011.00. There is no indication in PET that there are different versions of the manual rack for these cars.

I have that same number on my rack. I mounted it on the crossmember and it looked like it fits. I couldn't find the number anywhere either. The one reference I did find thought it was from a cup car.

If you are referencing the "Turbo Cup" cars, they actually came with a power rack that had been "de-powered", not a 944 manual rack.

I took out my 83's steering rack recently, and ordered new early manual rack tie rod ends without thinking. They showed up and i took them out of the box, "Wtf they don't fit my rack..?" My 83's manual rack has female tie rod ends. Weird. Looked at my rack part number, I too have a manual "944.347.015.00" steering rack. It really looks like it is original on my car but who knows. I found a thread that seems to point that my rack might be a "turbo cup 951" rack, with 18:1 ratio? Cool!
Anybody know? I guess I could figure out some way to measure this.
Could my 83 have come stock with the 015 box? If it is some sort of special box, I wonder if my car was a track racer at some point a long time ago.. lol

Don't know what this means for ratio of my box, but just tested the rack and it's less than 4 steering wheel revolutions to go from lock to lock... Seems pretty tight to me.

Regular manual rack is 944 347 011 00. 944 347 015 00 is a "sport" version that they used on the 944 turbo cup cars, you could get it on regular 86 951 or up to 86 944 too. It will fit just fine.

are there any differences to the power steering between early and late offset cars?

My question isn't a matter of fitting. It was on my 83, so it was an option that could've been had factory?

It's a slightly higher ratio that the regular rack and iirc came with a larger steering wheel to overcome the extra effort required.
