Post Cam help (pic)

Well.. I finally removed the cheesehead bolt to the cam. I had to drill the bolt out since the last mechanic did not replace it and it was stripped. Unfortunately in the drilling process the drill bit touched the head of the cam. Don't think it's a big deal, but would like a second opinion? Suggestions

yikes.....sorry to hear about that, I'm afraid that might be a new cam now...not sure but i don't think it can be balance correctly with a flaw like that.

As a Technician I don't think it is a big deal either the amount of metal is small and the washer still will have enough metal to hold the sprocket in place. I would use it.

As an automotive engineer in a mfg facility, I would not worry about it at all. The material removed is so close to the center of mass that it wont throw off the balance.
Use it and dont sweat it. As long as everything goes back together OK.

No worries....

Like awilson said, the metal missing is minute and very close to center, shouldn't make a differnce.

If you really are concerned, take an equal amount off of the large nut opposite where the damage is.

Cheers

See.....no worries, I also believe that the damage is not worth replacing cam over. Since the large nut(carrier peice) needs replacing, can anyone confirm if carrier peice is the same from an '83na car as it is for a '89 951? If so, I can supply you an extra one I have. part number 944-105-142-00. HTH

If you decide not to chance it, I have a spare 951 cam you can get for a couple bucks. Just sitting on a shelf.

However, if the bolt head is already stripped then the driver is useless
