Reverse Light Bulbs
#49
Ok, I ordered a pair of bulb sockets each for Glen from OZ and Dave from MA. If anyone else that is getting bulbs wants them, let me know. I'll just charge the $3USD each my local VW dealer is charging me and put them in the bulb box.
I should probably toss in some spade connectors and wire for you guys so you don't need to chase around for them. $1 should cover that.
I can also get folks small (1/3rd oz.) tubes of dielectric grease for the bulb bases for $3, if you want.
I should be getting the backup bulbs one of these days, but then it is run tests for heat, etc., including 7 days of constant burn to make sure these things will last.
Hugh: when you get Simpson's used sockets, scrub off the base contacts with some sand paper. My old ones had a fair amount of corrosion.

Hi Dan,
I haven't read the whole thread, but put me down for the whole rear end kit. Will update later cause I'm at work right now!
Thanks!
Jim 1987 944S (who knows that transactions with IceShark are always illuminating!)

Ok, ordered 2 more pair for LED from PR and Jim in Boca. Rennlisters will probably clean out the entire North American inventory at this rate.
LED and Glen, give me your zip/postal codes so I can play around with shipping dimensions and weight to figure out the best size box to get for this project that will be safe and the cheapest to ship.

Jason, I'm going to just order 20 sockets, so 10 upgrades. I can't keep calling this VDub parts guy every hour telling him to order some more. That will cut the North American inventory in ~ half. As I noted earlier, I even talked to Hella, who originally made them, and when these are gone they are really gone. Then one will need to go to the parts breakers to get used ones.
I hope you order a bunch of replacement bulbs (see prior post on tungsten blackening) since we need big volume to get the costs down. The bulbs will be German manufacture (Phillips/Narva or Osram/Sylvania), not cheap Chinese or Taiwan crap. Sad note, NO ONE in America makes these bulbs anymore. I guess we are all selling pizzas to each other and "consulting".

Hey Dan,
If the bulbs turn out to be as super duper as you say I would be interested in reverse lights. I'll stick with LED for brake lights.
In fact that is the way the trucking industry is heading. Every big rig I see on the road in my (very industrial) area is using LED for tail lights. They just never seem to wear out. While they are just sick expensive and not as bright as halogen, the MTBF is 100,000+ hours for an LED 1156 style module
