Post Transmission Mount or other alternative?

I can manually move my transmission with my left arm on my back w/o the car jacked up, not much effort is applied but still a good little nudge. I can even feel it move in my shifter, when I hold it back all the way in second, 4th or something and hit the gas then let off in a rhythm. Could it just need tightened up under there?? (haven't had time to check) Or is are these $167.57 transmission mounts unavoidable.

You should be able to move it craig. (a little at least). You should need to tighten it. I would imagine you wouldn't know if the mount came loos from the crossmember. That price sounds like a quote for the mount and the cross member. <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

Yeah the mount is pricey. But you'll forget all about how much you spent on the dinky little thing when you see where the mount actually is and what you have to do to replace it.

Let me put it this way. I'm going to replace my transmission mount, and do the clutch too since I'm already there....

Sigh.

If you reach waaaay up over the crossmember you might be able to barely feel 1 or 2 of the 4 bolts you need to remove.

How late is the crusher at the junkyard open?

bad idea craig. You'll be charged book time on removing the trany if you do that. (10hr?) You dont have to remove it!!! If you were able to change your wastegate by yourself , you shouldn't have a problem here. Go For It man!

You can replace a 944 NA clutch in 10 hours! R+R on the transmission should take 2 MAX.

The trans and motor are rubber mounted.
They WILL move, and yes you can feel them move
in the shifter.
If it isn't broke, don't fix it.

I agree. That's what I was quoted for, and told was the book time! That's why I would do it myself.

I was also quoted 7 hrs for wastegate R & R btw.

Hmm, a local Porsche shop quoted me 9 hours to replace a 944 NA clutch. I bet they would only charge 2 hours for a transmission.

I've never done a clutch all by myself on a 944 (yet), but have been (un?)fortunate enough to experience transaxle rr 6 times. With the exception of installing and removing my last transaxle, they've all taken around 4 hours start to finish. Keep in mind I work alone, and ONLY with wrences, no transmission jack, didn't even use jackstands for most of them. That last transaxle I had in the car had a misaligned input shaft (slightly bent), so it was a pain to get the torque tube coupler to slide on. My first time was a little weird before I figured I should slide the coupler towards the tranny, didn't think I had enough room to remove it...

I remember about 3.5 years ago, when that retainer bolt came out for the shifter on the transaxle, and I had the car towed to a shop, and paid somebody to fix that... How times change! Haven't paid anybody a dime aside from parts for anything related to a car in about 2 years now, I think.

Well, point is it's easy and your car doesn't sound broken.

PS: And you get pissed when I try to tell you that you're spoiled...

Craig, firstoff there's no reason for you to start calling me names... Secondly what exaust and PS2 are you talking about (and here comes the provocative part, "the ones your parents got you")?

Call me a pre-judgemental bastard if you want but considering your age, and how easily you spend the amount of $ on your cars and that you seem to have no problem parting with that amount of dough, I have already made up my mind. I think that you either have your priorities in the wrong order, or you didn't truly earn the money you claimed to have earned, to pay for your Porsches! I'm almost positive I remember treads about how your dad(?) bought you that turbo because it had airbags, and abs. That makes me assume not only are you spoiled but also given too much freedom by your parents (and mislead them ofcourse). I'm not going to assume that what I think is the truth, I just think there's a good chanse.

Anyway, I've tried to help you in dept about a lot of things on IM, thought we were cool, guess not. Either way, so far with this post I haven't been trying to help you if you're wondering. But here's a tip for you:

I think if you were a bit more polite, not so many people would find you quite as annoying.

I know this comment was directed at somebody else, but I felt that one, bad! There are 4, maybe more, of us 951 owners on here that are 18 and under. I have been working all my life basically). I currently have 2 and a half jobs and am involved in Dual enrollment. My parents haven't have paid for anything posche related. I have spent a hair over 3 grand on my car in the past 5 months (turbo , tranny, MAF, pipes , ect.) and I just wanted to clarify. I bought it all. So age and responsiblity is not porportional
